My Hero Academia may be illustrated by cool costumes, amazing powers, and fights that give even most superhero movies a run for their money, but the series wouldn't be seeing the success that it has now if it weren't for its characters. There's always a person beneath the mask, and the layers and depth that Horikoshi Kohei is willing to peel back for his fans are astonishing.

Character backstories can range between quiet middle school disputes to Shakespearean tragedies yet nothing loses gravity to one another. Each backstory does the job of getting the audience to care about these characters. And while the series already has plenty of iconic backstories, there are still plenty of characters that it has yet to touch on.

10 Nezu's Disturbing Past As A Test Subject

Mr. Principal Nezu

Despite popular belief, Nezu is not a sign of a possible rat infestation within U.A. but is instead the academy's proud and polite principal. Always one to keep a stiff upper lip and a calm demeanor, Nezu has led the school with charm and tact and was even the one to suggest that All Might use the prestigious academy to find a successor to One for All.

Mousey charm notwithstanding, Nezu's history is still a mystery to the fans; and to an extent, that's disturbing. It was subtly dropped during the Exam Arc that Nezu was once experimented on by humans and thus has a sadistic side that he rarely (but surely) shows. This sparks so many questions about the science of this world as well as how someone with Nezu's abilities and spite against humanity was allowed to be in charge of children.

9 Mei Hatsume's Reason Behind Her Love For Inventions

While not every U.A. student necessarily needs a backstory, it would still be interesting to get a peek at the different motivations for each of them. It's one thing for a kid to just say that they want to be a cook or teacher. It's another to want to be a superpowered officer of the world. There has to be some motivation there.

In Mei Hatsume's case, she's one of the few students who actually wants to go into hero support. Not only that, she has an undying ambition and curiosity for invention. What exactly gave her this dream in life and how did she get this edge?

8 Neito Monoma's Inferiority Complex Origin

neito monoma mha

Of the various students in Class 1-B, it's Neito Monoma who needs to prove himself the most to the audience. While his constant jealousy and sly remarks on Class 1-A can be funny, this bitterness has made him difficult for some fans to get behind.

Given that being this arch might be bad for hero work, Monoma may have to start reflecting on his attitude issues, especially given that his copy Quirk is bound to be plot-relevant in the future. Why does Monoma want to be a hero? Why does he have such an inferiority complex? What is it going to take to help him see eye to eye with Class 1-A?

7 Nejire Hado As An Undeveloped Member Of The Big Three

Nejire Hado Smiling

Of U.A.'s legendary Big Three, Nejire Hado is easily the least developed. During the Shie Hassaikai Arc, Mirio Togata and Tamaki Amajiki not only had plenty of screen time but each had character-defining arcs. While Nejire has had a slightly increased role within the recent story, the fans don't know enough about her motivation and background to really get behind her.

What helped push Nejire into the Big Three? What makes her different than every other U.A. student? What kind of hero does she want to be? While participating in Beauty Pageants is interesting, it's not enough to really make her a character of her own.

6 Mr. Compress' Villain Origin Story

My Hero Academia - Mr Compress Marbles

The series has touched on nearly every one of the backstories for the original League of Villains. While the Meta Liberation Army Arc gave a decent spotlight for more of the team, it didn't get to touch on all of them, with the story of the eccentric Mr. Compress being sorely missed. Atsuhiro Sako was apparently an entertainer before he became the gentlemen thief that now graces Shigaraki's side.

As one of the most experienced members of the League, it would be interesting to see how Mr. Compress went down his villainous past and what exactly he did before to get his current reputation.

5 Gigantomachia's History With All For One

Anime Gigantomachia-My Hero Academia

Gigantomachia is one of the remaining members of All for One's original team. He has apparently been faithfully serving All for One for years and was his personal bodyguard before having his focus shifted towards Shigaraki. Looking into Gigantomachia's past would already be interesting just for the pure opportunity to look into the history and workings of All for One.

It would also be interesting to see how Gigantomachia got into the life of villainy and what in life he got out of working for All for One. Was he always a mountain monster or is he possibly an older experiment of All for One's?

4 Gran Torino's Involvement With One For All

Young Gran Torino

Gran Torino was an old colleague of Nana Shimura who went into hero work to accomplish a yet to be revealed goal. He was apparently a teacher at U.A. and took a special interest in Toshinori Yagi after Nana's passing. With his help, All Might eventually learned to control One for All and become strong and skilled enough to defeat All for One.

Sorahiko Torino's story would already be interesting to just get some perspective at the hidden workings that helped defend One for All, but it would also be great to see why he became a hero in the first place.

3 Nana Shimura's Time During A Crime-Ridden World

Nana Shimura smiling in My Hero Academia.

Nana Shimura was the One for All user prior to All Might and was his mentor during his U.A. years. She once had a son that she would have to abandon due to her conflict with All for One, but he would somehow learn of her later on. Learning about Nana would be a huge foray into the histories and backstories of many characters.

It would be a look at a crime-ridden world before the Symbol of Peace, those who had One for All before, the complicated family life that made Shigaraki, and the makings of the person that made All Might who he is today.

2 All For One's Reason For Wanting World Destruction

All for one with purple background

It may be a while before the series decides to pull the tragic backstory trigger for its main villain, but Kohei Horikoshi has done a great job of getting the fans excited for it. He created an entire, conspiratorial villain network that gave a home to some of society's biggest misfits and whose influence is still found today.

His entire family history is what helped push the hidden order behind One for All and launched an entire battle that he's still fighting today. He wants to help burn down the world for some unknown reason. There's a lot to cover here, and hopefully, the series covers it soon.

1 Katsuki Bakugo's Story Behind His Anger

Bakugo doing hero work

So far, Katsuki Bakugo's story has been intertwined with Deku's. And, to be fair, much of that has to do with the two of them being childhood friends. However, as rambunctious and independent as he may be now, the series has yet to really make Bakugo a character truly exclusive to Deku's story.

It would be great to see how Bakugo became as angry and committed as he is now and what he personally wants to get from hero work besides glory (if anything). Why is he always so angry? How did society's praise corrupt him? What was his home life like? What pieces of character development went into making a kid want to be the Baron of Explodo-kills?
