One of the most popular anime airing today, My Hero Academia has taken fans on a wild journey as Midoriya Izuku and his friends rise to become heroes. MHA has been revered for its diverse cast of cleverly written characters, fight scenes of epic proportions, and striking animation that packages everything together smoothly.

As great as My Hero is, it still suffers from the common trope of "plot armor," with heroes being spared, rescued, and winning the day only because the plot needs them to survive. Although the hero is expected to win the day, these heroic moments are dulled because of plot armor.

10 Episode 1: Midoriya Happens To Be Saved By The Number One Hero

In the very first episode, Midoriya is attacked on his way home by a villain with a slime-like body. No one else is around when he is held captive and unable to escape until the number one hero All Might jumps in at the nick of time.

Granted, if no one came to rescue Midoriya that would've ended the story too quickly, and if Midoriya hadn't met All Might and gotten to know him personally, his life would never have changed. It's a huge coincidence that frankly, fans are grateful for.

9 Practical Exam: Midoriya Miraculously Learns How To Use One For All

Midoriya izuku using One For All

After training rigorously with his idol All Might, Midoriya preps his body to become a vessel for the unique power of the One For All quirk. With no time to actually train using the quirk, Midoriya runs to the UA High School written and practical exam with no knowledge on how to use the power himself.

Somehow in the heat of battle, Midoriya lands a powerful punch in order to rescue another hopeful student, even though the enemy won't give him any points to pass the exam. The chances of him perfectly using his new power was a long shot, but it worked out, and Midoriya was enrolled into UA.

8 The League Of Villains First Assault: Tsuyu Saved By A Battered Eraser Head

Tsuyu almost killed by tomura

Class 1-A's training is interrupted by an assault from the League of Villains who attempt to hold the students hostage in order to lure All Might out and kill him. They don't count on the students being capable of fighting back, but do a good job at beating down their teacher Aizawa-sensei, who is rendered unable to help the students for some time.

Tsuyu is targeted by the ring leader Shigaraki Tomura who possesses the ability to destroy anything with just a touch of his hand. Standing by Tsuyu's side, Midoriya is frozen from exhaustion and fear as Shigaraki lays his deadly hand on Tsuyu's head, but Aizawa-sensei manages to erase the villain's power just before Tsuyu is killed.

7 Sports Festival: Midoriya Finds A Loophole In Shinso's "Brainwashing"

Izuku brainwashed by Shinso in My Hero Academia.

In the first one-on-one match in the finale of the Sports Festival, Midoriya is faced with Hitori, whose quirk is a mystery. As soon as the match begins, Hitori unleashes his Brainwashing quirk just by talking to Midoriya. Supposedly once an enemy is caught in this trap, there is no way to escape, but Midoriya's connection with One For All acts as a loophole to the powerful quirk.

At first, Midoriya follows Hitori's command to walk out of bounds and forfeit the match. Just when all hope seems lost, the former One For All heroes come to Midoriya's aid by taking back control of his body. Hitori would've had the win if it weren't for Midoriya having a little help from his mysterious friends.

6 Sports Festival: Bakugo Wins Because Of Todoroki's Trauma

Shoto Todoroki vs Katsuki Bakugo

The end of the one-on-one matches has Katsuki Bakugo pitted against Shoto Todoroki, two of the most promising young heroes of the festival. It's no surprise how close the match is, but it was already clear that Todoroki is much stronger when using his fire to balance himself out.

That being said, Todoroki was conflicted about using that power again, but even with inspiration from Midoriya, Todoroki's fire was still not as strong as it could've been. This is shown at the very end of the match. When the two throw very powerful hits against one another, Todoroki is distracted by the painful memory of his tormented mother and thus his power was weakened, leaving an opening for Bakugo to win. Even Bakugo wasn't happy about the ending.

5 Iida's Revenge: Modriya Coming In Clutch

Izuku fighting Stain

Tenya Iida went through a huge change in character when he sought after Hero Killer Stain with the intent of killing him to avenge his fallen older brother. Those plans go awry very quickly as he jumps into battle without any backup nor any strategy on how to defeat Stain. With the Hero Killer's quirk, Iida was trapped and just seconds away from being killed when Midoriya happened to arrive at the right time.

The coincidence here is huge since Midoriya happened to be in the area, happened to guess Iida's rogue intentions, and somehow managed to pinpoint exactly where he was with just the guesstimation of "he must be in one of Hosu's alleyways." The plot armor was incredibly strong here, but it was certainly a relief for the audience.

4 Fighting The Hero Killer: Iida's Released At Just The Right Time

Tenya Iida

Todoroki joins the fight against Stain thanks to Midoriya's quick thinking in sharing his exact location. The young heroes learn that Stain's quirk immobilizes them when he ingests their blood, however, the power varies depending on blood type. Although it's an interesting detail to the quirk that prevents it from being overpowered, young heroes' release is a bit too coincidental.

Just before Todoroki is wounded by Stain, Iida triumphantly breaks out of the paralysis just in time to save his friend from the attack.

3 Stain's Finale: The Defeated Hero Killer Protects Midoriya

Hero Killer Stain

Midoriya, Todoroki, and Iida manage to defeat Stain, but that isn't the end of the Hero Killer. As Endeavor finishes off the powered-up Nomus, one manages to slip away and target Midoriya.

In a surprise attack, Midoriya is taken captive by the Nomu, but Stain, who was already tied up after his defeat, rushes to Midoriya's rescue before anyone else. It's very doubtful that the young heroes just didn't tie him up well enough, and even if Stain could escape, why not continue his attack on Iida at the very least. It's all thanks to these coincidences that the young heroes survive and Midoriya is spared from the Nomu.

2 Summer Training Camp: A Distracted Villain Forgets All About Midoriya

Izuku fighting Muscular in my hero academia

When the League of Villains splits up to attack the students across the training camp, Midoriya is stuck in a fight against the villain Muscular by himself. Even with all the power One For All has, he is overpowered by the villain's raw strength. Just when Muscular had Midoriya in his clutches, he allowed himself to be distracted by the young Kota who just awakened his quirk.

Rather than finishing Midoriya off at that moment, Muscular changed his focus on Kota, allowing for Midoriya to accumulate enough power from his quirk to win the battle.

1 Fighting Overhaul: Midoriya Overcomes Fate Itself

Midoriya powered up by eri's quirk

Midoriya and his classmates must help the Pro Heroes in several battles against Shie Hassaikai, including against their leader Kai Chisaki (aka Overhaul). Overhaul proves to be a terrifying foe, pushing Lemillion to the brink and rendering Nighteye hopeless as he literally can see no positive future with his quirk, which has had 100% accuracy so far.

Overhaul himself said that Midoriya wasn't strong, but the young hero was able to win with the sudden help of Eri. Eri not only managed to overcome her fear of Chisaki, she succeeded at tearing down his strength with no prior training. As incredible as it was to see Midoriya win, it was a long shot that relied on the coincidence that a small child could fight their trauma so suddenly. It's also strange how Nighteye couldn't see that coming.
