My Dress-Up Darling was the big hit rom-com title of the Winter 2022 anime season -- a charming seinen romance starring the genki girl Kitagawa Marin and her new cosplay partner, the hina doll enthusiast Gojo Wakana. In the span of 12 episodes, Marin and Gojo became best friends, made some great costumes together and generally proved that opposites really can attract.

The story is mainly told through the eyes of Suzuki, a lively genki girl not unlike Marin, who isn't nearly as superficial as her daily life at school would suggest. Instead, Suzuki has a deep and meaningful crush on her kuudere classmate Tani, as she understands that they are very different people and could easily enrich one another's lives.
It's almost like she has meta-knowledge of how on-screen chemistry works, and what's more, Suzuki admires Tani's steadfast personal authenticity. Suzuki doesn't like it when people become someone they're not to please others -- it's all about what's on the inside, and the attractive confidence to be oneself no matter what others think. That takes courage, and Suzuki loves Tani's own brand of courage.
The two of them soon strike up an unlikely friendship, and as hoped, their totally opposite natures give them strong on-screen chemistry. Suzuki is much more talkative and energetic than Tani, but Tani doesn't find that annoying -- he secretly finds it endearing, and in fact, he fears that he is boring by comparison. He's more insecure than Suzuki realizes, but his faith in himself remains unmoved, which helps keep Suzuki interested in him. In short, the two characters are good for one another, with Suzuki giving Tani fun, adventure and new friends in his daily life while Tani can inspire Suzuki to have more self-confidence and build her self-esteem on her deepest ideals, beliefs and hobbies.
This is just like Gojo and Marin in My Dress-Up Darling, with each of them being different halves of a much greater whole. Marin helped Gojo explore the world of cosplay and stoke his passion for fabric, while Gojo helped Marin gain technical knowledge on cosplay and fabric. It was a business partnership, a friendship and a romance all in one.
