There is quite a charm to watching detective anime, especially old-school shows that are purely about solving mysteries and, hopefully, proving the authorities wrong about underestimating the main character who solved said mysteries. While watching one detective anime after the other can be quite mentally exhausting, a good mystery is worth the amount of time and emotions that fans invest in them.
There are some detective anime that fans shouldn't miss at any cost. Detective anime from the '90s, 2000s, and 2010s encompass different genres like horror, supernatural, psychological, and comedy. There's a detective anime for everyone out there, and the best part is that all of them have aired, which means viewers can binge-watch all the episodes in one go.
Updated on December 24th, 2023 by Sage Ashford: The popularity of detective anime continues to grow, as fans will never truly get tired of a good mystery. This list has been updated to include more information on some of the best detective anime on the market.

20 Best Murder Mystery Anime, Ranked
Perfect for suspense fans and thrill seekers, the best mystery anime deliver shocking twist guaranteed to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. In the ‘80s, tons of anime were based off classic literature. This lead to the creation of Sherlock Hound, a series based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, only with everyone in the series turned into dogs. A series aimed at children, the show nevertheless features Sherlock Holmes matching wits against his longtime rival, Moriarty.
Changing everyone into canines is just one of the major changes for Sherlock Hound, though. It also features some great Victorian steampunk elements, often used by Moriarty to pull off his capers. Though it’s aimed at children, it’s still worth a watch to check out one of Hayao Miyazaki’s last times as a director for television.

In the ‘90s, one of the most successful anime franchises was the adaptation of seinen manga You’re Under Arrest. The story focused on two young policewomen—Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa—recently partnered together at the Bokuto Precinct.
Of course, not every detective show has to be serious. You’re Under Arrest is just as much a slice-of-life comedy as it is a detective anime. Some episodes focus on relationship shenanigans, while others might feature the ladies on a case tracking down a vigilante who attacks people committing misdemeanors with a bat.

Inspired by DC and Marvel Comics, Hamatora shows what happens if people with powers formed a detective agency instead of a superhero team. In this world, only a few people possess special powers, known as Minimum. Nice and Murasaki are two Minimum Holders that aim to solve crimes in the city of Yokohama. However, when a new case reveals Minimum Holders being murdered, the two find themselves pulled into something deeper than their fledgling agency might be capable of solving.
By now, most people are familiar with the “sylish detective” genre of anime series. However, Hamatora stands head and shoulders above the rest thanks to its lush visuals and more likable characters. It feels a lot like if GetBackers crossed with the X-Men.

Black Butler isn't an anime that immediately comes to mind when one says "detective series," mostly because the show's tagged as a mystery, historical, and shonen, among others. On the surface, Black Butler is about young Ciel, who promises to give his soul to the demon Sebastian in return for finding and punishing the people behind his family's murder.
Scratch the surface a little more, and one will see this human boy-demon butler duo solving mystery upon mystery, along with various sidekicks. In fact, its 2018 murder-mystery sequel, Book of Atlantic, had one of the most unexpected plot twists in the entirety of the anime series.
