Warner Bros.' free-to-play platform fighter MultiVersus has recently released its newest character: Marvin the Martian. The iconic antagonist from Looney Tunes has finally arrived, making him the third character from the franchise to get a spot in MultiVersus.

Though Marvin the Martian is listed as an Assassin, he often feels like a Mage due to his high reliance on projectiles, ability cooldowns, and his general lack of powerful close-quarters moves. Unlike most recent MultiVersus characters like Gremlins' Stripe, Marvin's unique passive isn't anything overly complex; he can simply walk while crouching. While it may seem a bit useless, the crouch actually shortens Marvin's hitbox by a small amount, so it can be useful for low-profile dodging attacks.

What to Know About Marvin the Martian's Moveset

Marvin the Martian's moveset is entirely built around making clever use of projectiles to catch opponents off-guard. His neutral special is a fascinating move that serves as the basis for much of Marvin's game plan. With this, Marvin hits a large button, hitting enemies near him. This also reverses the horizontal direction of all allied projectiles, which includes his own. This reversal mechanic single-handedly makes Marvin a challenge to play, but players who can master it will be rewarded with extremely satisfying combos.

Marvin has a handful of projectiles to synergize with his neutral special. His neutral attack is a bubble, which only moves if it's fully charged. While quite slow, it can both suspend allied projectiles inside it and reflect enemy projectiles. It also has a good amount of knockback, but it's hard to land without clever use of reverse to catch opponents unaware. Up attack is a vertical projectile, which can be slightly aimed if Marvin is on the ground. It has great range to snipe opponents near the top of the stage.

Marvin's grounded side special is also a projectile, which pulls enemies hit towards Marvin for an easy combo starter. In the air, Marvin's side special is a forward headbutt that combos easily into air attacks. His Up Special is similar to Morty's, as it spawns a spaceship platform. The difference is Marvin's spaceship fires a heavy projectile rocket towards Marvin, doing big damage and knockback. The rocket can be reversed and suspended in Marvin's bubble projectile.

Marvin's down special plants a flag on the ground, applying the targeted debuff to any enemies hit. The rest of Marvin's moveset is fairly standard, save for his down attack. This is fairly strong, but if it misses and the button is held, Marvin will damage himself, which is a dangerous downside for such a light character.

Strategies and Combos for Playing as Marvin the Martian

Unlike many of MultiVersus' other Assassins, Marvin doesn't have much as far as true hitstun combos go. However, he excels at advanced combo routing, interesting set-ups, and dodge trapping. While this makes him very hard to pick up, it also significantly raises his skill ceiling. Only players fully dedicated to playing Marvin will be able to extract the character's full potential, but those lucky few will have tons of fun playing him.

Marvin's neutral attack bubble is key -- it can be used in neutral, as a set-up, or even to reflect enemy projectiles. Unfortunately, the projectile version of the attack has a cooldown, so players will need to take matchups into account. Using it against projectile-heavy mages is very helpful. Since the bubble is slow-moving, Marvin can run in front of it before it reaches the enemies, messing up their timing and possibly starting a combo for free. Additionally, using neutral special's reversal power effectively is extremely important to confuse and overwhelm opponents.

Marvin still has some combos that aren't reliant on cooldowns, so he isn't completely helpless without his abilities. Opening with a grounded side attack, Marvin can continue into neutral special, dodge forward, neutral special, and an entire side attack combo to rack up a decent amount of damage. That being said, close-quarters fighting is definitely not Marvin's strong suit and should be avoided when possible. Most characters will outrange him or armor through his air attacks.

Ideal Partners for Marvin the Martian

Superman crossing his arms in Multiversus

Marvin, like the other Assassins, greatly appreciates tanks like Superman to take on the brunt of the opponent's attacks so he can set his traps and harass opponents with projectiles. Alternatively, Marvin can be paired with other projectile-heavy characters like Tom & Jerry or Bugs Bunny, though that is only recommended for teams with extremely high synergy. Marvin's reversal can often negatively synergize with allies, sending their high-cooldown projectile off-target.
