Nevermind DC Comics, Multiversity is one of the most ambitious books created by either of the Big Two in quite some time. It starts out by picking up on the plot threads of Final Crisis, then goes on to color in the details of five separate universes in the multiverse, all while they deal with a threat on all of their Earths the likes of which they’ve never seen. Then the story finishes up by seeing the heroes of 51 worlds go into battle against these threats beyond their own comprehension and come out with the victory….for now.

Though we have no idea when Multiversity 2 is coming, the original series introduced a host of some of the coolest new characters we’ve seen in a while. This list looks at some of the most powerful of their number.

10 NIX UOTAN

Nix Uotan is son of the Proto-Monitor Novu, and last of the monitors after the events of Final Crisis. Known as “Superjudge”, he stands as a superbeing alongside the other superheroes. He possesses cosmic awareness, which is why battling against the Gentry for him was so dangerous. His powers of dimensional travel and invulnerability allowed him to free Darkseid from his prison after the events of Final Crisis and made it nearly impossible to take him down when he turned evil. It took Flashes from the Entire Multiverse and one of the most powerful beings of Earth-11 to do so.

9 CAPTAIN CARROT

Captain Carrot

If Captain Carrot’s inclusion on this list feels rather silly, then that means a healthy lack of respect for Cartoon Physics! Morrison decided that Earth-26 would actually embody the physics of the cartoon characters they resemble. It’s specifically mentioned in the Multiversity Guidebook that they can survive almost any physical assault, and the comic proves it. Carrot is smooshed by an analog of the Hulk from Earth-8 but comes back with a vengeance, knocking him out. Later he even gets his head lasered off, before putting himself back together to aid in saving the day.

8 CAPTAIN ATOM, EARTH-4

Final-Crisis-Allen-Adam

Allen Adam, the Captain Atom of Earth-4, gained his powers by being too close to a uranium engine when it exploded. The energy turned him into a disembodied mind knocked loose from time, but he had enough power to put himself back together stronger than ever.

Easily one of the most powerful characters in the series, he can alter reality on an unheard-of scale, and perceive multiple different “eras” of time simultaneously. If anything, his biggest weakness is that his powers and his quantum senses are often dulled by the drugs he takes from the military.

7 OVERMAN

The protege of Adolf Hitler, Overman had the misfortune of being a child which landed in the wrong country at the wrong time. He was raised to fight for the Third Reich, and helped to usher in their Thousand Year Reign. But over the years, he became regretful of what was done to create this Reign. But unwilling to put aside his responsibilities to the people who lived, he did nothing. Until finally Metropolis was laid to waste by the falling satellite belonging to their Earth’s New Reichsmen. It destroyed the entire city...but left Overman standing.

6 AQUAWOMAN

We don’t get to see much of Aquawoman, as most of Multiversity goes off to develop other stories in other worlds. We do know she’s the Queen of Atlantis on her Earth, Earth-11 where everyone seems to have their genders flipped. She eagerly joins the search for the Gentry to help save her Earth, and winds up at the center of one of the biggest battles at the end. During that time, she gets Thunderer to summon up a storm, and channels that energy to bring down the Gentry-altered Nix Uotan, who’d previously ignored all of their attacks.

5 THE THUNDERER

When we first see the Thunderer, he’s not looking so hot. He’s the last survivor of a ruined Earth-8, as everyone else has been murdered. Nonetheless, that still means he was strong enough to be the last survivor. And even though just being around the Gentry alters a person’s thoughts , he still had more than enough courage to led the charge to fight against them a second time. And when things finally began to turn in the direction of the heroes, the Thunderer struck the final blow on one of the Gentry, all on his own.

4 THE GENTRY

HELLMACHINE of The Gentry

The primary villains of the series, the Gentry aren’t just a clever pun on the real villain of modern society. Before we even start the series, they’ve proven capable of reducing an entire planet to nothing.

There appears to be no life, and they prove capable of stripping everything good out of a person and turning them to “their” side. That’s certainly what eventually happens to Nix Uotan once he’s left alone with them for a while. Their reality-altering powers and desire to destroy everything earn them a spot on this list.

3 THE MARVEL FAMILY

While they are from the happiest Earth, that doesn’t mean they’re any slouches in the power department. They battle against Dr. Sivana and deal with pretty impossible odds, especially since the Sivanas figure out a way to craft an entirely new day meant for their own victory. But in the end, not only are they capable of outlasting Sivanaday, but in the Multiversity comic they help turn the tide of battle by chucking Sivana’s fake Rock of Eternity into some of the enemies. Guess when you have the powers of gods it’s never safe to be counted out.

2 E-23 SUPERMAN (CALVIN ELLIS)

Calvin Ellis Superman standing together with Earth-23's Justice League

Calvin Ellis isn’t just the Superman of Earth-23, but he’s also the President. Probably the most well-developed character in the story other than Captain Carrot and maybe Nix Uotan, this version of Superman is placed as the leader of the team fighting for the multiverse at the House of Heroes. Though most versions of Superman are weaker analogues, this version seems to be just as powerful as the main one. He proves capable of bringing down the Earth-45 creature Superdoomsday, which successfully killed off Optiman of Earth-36.

1 THE EMPTY HAND

The Empty Hand is, unfortunately, the most powerful person on this list. We’re not exactly sure what he is. He’s a reference to the Empty Hand Krona saw at the beginning of time that split the universe into a multiverse, which already says enough about his abilities. We also know he commands the Gentry, and seems to have some grand designs that will lead to him ultimately taking control of the multiverse. In fact, he even mentions having already destroyed “Multiverse 2”, which gives us another hint as to how absurdly powerful he is. The last story with The Empty Hand may never be written, but he remains ever-present as one of the most dangerous threats in the DC multiverse.
