Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch recently discussed the internal conflict his character will experience in the upcoming film.

Multiverse of Madness will see Strange interrogate his true nature, with Cumberbatch describing the difficult questions his character will have to answer about himself throughout the course of the film. "There's a lot of reckoning," Cumberbatch said during an interview with Empire. "And a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become."

While the specifics of Strange's journey of self-discovery remain veiled in secrecy, Cumberbatch assured fans Multiverse of Madness will be more than a visual effects showcase. "It's a big moment for Strange," the actor said during another recent interview. "We can bring our game to this large tentpole fare and give it an authenticity and a heartbeat and something that makes it not just effects-laden nonsense."

Cumberbatch's recent comments seem to suggest Multiverse of Madness will be more of "his" movie. But Strange will be far from the only character on screen when Multiverse of Madness hits theaters, as reports have indicated reshoots for the film will include more cameos and Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts. In fact, Cumberbatch recently mentioned Doctor Strange 2 has undergone additional filming.

The continued reshoots don't appear to have the actor's spirits down, however, as Cumberbatch claimed Multiverse of Madness will rival the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the highest-grossing pandemic era film. "It's a big, big movie," Cumberbatch said of the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. "It's going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it's got, we're going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I'll put my flag in the sand."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters May 6.
