While Disney has yet to report its Disney+ earnings -- or losses -- on their exclusive streaming sales of Mulan, the film's international box office sales brought in a strong $5.9M in revenue this weekend from Croatia, Czech Republic, the Middle East, Slovakia, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Mulan also debuted #1 at the box office in Malaysia, Singapore, UAE and Thailand.

According to Deadline, Niko Caro's Mulan received "the largest opening weekend to date in Singapore and Thailand" and also premiered second at the box office in Taiwan and Saudi Arabia. It's worth adding that in the markets that Mulan performed well, all of them but Taiwan are currently observing seating capacity restrictions. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, theaters overseas reduced seating capacity by a "30%-50% range" this weekend, which has likely impacted Mulan's ability to gain revenue internationally and as quickly as other film releases have done in prior summers.

However, even amidst a global pandemic, Mulan still over-performed prior releases of live-action Disney films internationally. Compared to Disney's live-action Aladdin's sales in Saudi Arabia, Mulan's opening numbers were 153% higher. Box office sales for Mulan in the UAE were also 6% higher than Disney's live-action Cinderlla debut. While the international box office sales might seem low for a movie with a pre-marketing budget of $200M, it is highly possible that Mulan will steadily rise to the top of theater sales as the weeks march on and more theater members have the chance to view the anticipated film.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro and the screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. Originally, Mulan was scheduled to premiere on March 27 of this year after its March 9 world premiere in Hollywood; however, the coronavirus pandemic delayed the release, pushing the date back to a September release on Disney+'s streaming service with an international box office debut in markets that were unable to access the Disney+ platform.

Directed by Niki Caro, Disney's live-action Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan and Yoson An as Chen Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is now available through Premier Access on Disney+.
