Magic: The Gathering is the world's first trading card game. Having made its debut in August 1993, the game has undergone many changes since then, including the creation of several new formats, from Modern to Cube to Pauper. That also includes the creation of Commander/EDH circa 2010, and every new expansion set has new goodies for that Commander, without fail.

The brand-new Streets of New Capenna set takes place on a plane stylized after art deco 1920s crime families, and New Capenna's cards are excellent for a variety of formats, Commander included. A few of its cards are ideal to be the commadner of a deck, while the rest should do well in the 99 in any multiplayer game. Streets of New Capenna has some of the finest Commander-worthy cards.

10 Jetmir, Nexus Of Revels Can Lead A Token Army

jetmir

The Cabaretti faction is primarily based on green, but in a Cabaretti Commander deck, all three colors will shine if Jetmir, Nexus of Revels is the commander. Jetmir is an aggressively costed legendary creature with not one, but three power-boosting effects based on how many creatures the player has.

A Jetmir deck encourages aggressive token creation from all three colors, and cards such as Assemble the Legion, Dragonlair Spider, and White Sun's Zenith crank out tokens in a hurry. Then, cards such as Craterhoof Behemoth and Titanic Ultimatum help Jetmir turn his token party-goers into a game-smashing army that can overrun any board state.

9 Raffine, Scheming Seer Reward Evasive Attacks

raffine

While Jetmir leads the Naya-colored faction, the brilliant sphinx Raffine commands the vast information network of the blue-black-white Obscura group, primarly based on the color blue. Raffine won't go wide like Jetmir, intead this small, evasive commander rewards an Esper-colored deck for playing powerful fliers and attacking with them.

Raffine will only pump one attacking creature at a time, but that boost will be much larger if the Raffine deck attacks with several creatures at once, so teamwork is key. If a single attacker connives several times in a row, it will gain several +1/+1 counters, put good cards into the player's hand, or some conbination thereof. Information really is power.

8 Halo Fountain Is Perfect For White Decks

halo fountain

It's generally understood that white mana is the weakest in Commander, but cards like Halo Fountain aim to change that. Gimmicky artifacts like this one are too awkward for quick, focused formats like booster draft Limited, and especially Standard or Modern, but Commander is a different story for Halo Fountain.

Halo Fountain is clearly meant for go-wide decks, and plenty of white-based Commander decks can do that, such as Darien, King of Kjeldor. Halo Fountain can make more tokens and draw much-needed cards until the player hits critical mass and can outright win the game after tapping their 15+ creatures, such as by attacking another player.

7 Structural Assault Tears It All Down

strutural assault

Streets of New Capenna has a few exciting red cards for the Commander format, including the merciless Structural Assault. Commander is known for having boardwipes such as Toxic Deluge and Supreme Verdict, but now there's Structural Assault, a red boardwipe with more tricks than Blasphemous Act.

Structural Assault begins the chaos by destroying all artifacts, sort of like Vandalblast, and then it will deal serious damage to all creatures if enough artifacts were destroyed this turn. If a red player is falling behind or of someone is playing a serious artifact deck, casting Structural Assault is a must.

6 Bootleggers' Stash Is A Treasure Hoard

bootleggers' stash

Ever since the two-set Ixalan block, Treasure artifact tokens have been on the rise, and Streets of New Capenna is doing big business with them. Treasures are mostly made by this set's red and green spells, and Bootleggers' Stash is the biggest haul of Treasures any magical mobster could ever ask for.

Bootleggers' Stash is costly and vulnerable to artifact removal, but if it survives, the player will ramp their mana like never before. Casting a massive X spell or paying for a costly commander's tax will be easy with so many treasures, and this gives the player some use for leftover lands on other players' turns, too.

5 Spara's Headquarters & Its Kin Are Essential Tri-Lands

spara's headquarters

Spara's Headquarters is a fancy rare land from Streets of New Capenna that stands for an entire cycle. The Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set introduced players to tri-lands that can cycle and have three basic land types, but those lands were based on the wedges, which favors wedge-colored Commander decks.

Now the shards are catching up. Spara's Headquarters and the other four cards in this cycle are essential for shard-colored Commander decks, or even five-color decks that want more than just the Ikoria tri-lands in them. Now a WUBRG deck can have the full mega-cycle of tri-lands and get all the colors they like.

4 Lord Xander, The Collector Has No Mercy

lord xander

Lord Xander commands the Maestros family, the black-red-blue mafia with an emphasis on the potential cruelty of black mana. Either as a commander or as a card in the 99, Lord Xander, the Collector is a devastating Grixis-colored creature that can dismantle its opponent in many ways.

Lord Xander is a big creature for Grixis decks, and it can make any unfortunate opponent discard cards, mill their deck away, and sacriice some of their nonland cards. If the player can flicker Lord Xander, such as with Deadeye Navigator, he'll do this many times and demolish his foes. Or, the playe can use Panharmonicon to double the effects.

3 Riveteers Charm Has Relevant Modes

riveteers charm

Not every Commander-worthy card in Streets of New Capenna is a game-winning mythic rare. Players need something cheaper to cast in the meantime, and that includes utility cards such as Charms, or three-mode instants. The red-based faction, the Riveteers, offers one of the best Charms seen in years.

Riveteers Charm can exile a graveyard down to the last card, which is great against graveyard-based decks such as Meren of Clan Nel Toth. Or, Riveteers Charm can force an opponent to sacrifice their costliest creature, and effects such as hexproof and indestructible won't do a thing to save that creature. The last mode can also cast card from the library ahead of time.

2 Titan Of Industry Has Serious Utility

titan of industry

Anything can happen in Commander games, which means players want flexible cards that can answer any threat or defend their cards from unwanted effects. So, green-heavy players can try Titan of Industry, a massive beater with not one, but four solid options to choose from.

Reach and trample are indeed relevant, but there's more. Titan of Industry can also take out troublesome artifacts or enchantments to generate value, protect an ally with a shield counter – such as the commander, or even gain life or make a 4/4 Rhino creature token. On any board state, Titan of Industry is must-have.

1 Void Rend Is Excellent Removal

void rend

The Commander format calls for flexible removal, and some decks might struggle to destroy certain permanent types such as planeswalkers, artifacts, or enchantments. That's why the blue-based Obscura gang has Void Rend, a three-color instant that can hit any nonland permanent.

Void Rend will simply destroy anything that the Obscura player doesn't like, and even if an opponent is also running blue, Void Rend can't be countered under any circumstances. Only effects like protection, hexproof, and indestructible can fend off Void Rend, and those aren't easy to come by.
