Magic: The Gathering's newest expert-level set, the Modern Horizons 2 set, is geared for advanced gameplay in sessions of booster draft Limited. Thus, its cards are powerful, complex and richly rewarding for experienced players. All of them will be legal for play in the Modern Constructed format -- but which cards are the most valuable?

Card prices can be dictated both by the rarity of the card and the card's utility in powerful, relevant decks in one or more formats. Essential cards for Modern can easily be worth $10 or more, and the enemy-color fetchlands haven't been reprinted since Modern Masters 2017, meaning they are quite expensive. With any luck, Modern Horizons 2 will change that.

The White Cards of Modern Horizons 2

mtg cards

Solitude is a brand-new card to the Modern format, a 3/2 that can appear at the last second to exile another creature and allow its controller to gain life equal to its power. Notably, Solitude can be cast without mana, and that's a powerful effect. This card is currently worth $25 according to MTG Goldfish. Another valuable card is Esper Sentinel, which can steeply tax opponents for playing noncreature spells, and giving it equipment or power-boosting aura makes the tax tough to pay. Esper Sentinel currently worth $22.

Then, there's Ranger-Captain of Eos, a retro foil that is worth an impressive $43.77. Sanctifier en-Vec is a cheap but effective Cleric that is safe from black and red effects, and it can seriously sabotage an opponent's graveyard for red and black cards. It's worth $3.49. Other retro foils like Giver of Runes ($30) are also quite valuable.

The Blue Cards of Modern Horizons 2

Modern Horizons 2's blue cards are a stark reminder that blue is arguably the strongest of the five colors. Murktide Regent, a mono-blue Dragon with the delve ability from Khans of Tarkir, and delving will give it +1/+1 counters. It can gain even more counters soon after that, and it's worth $21 on MTG Goldfish right now. Svyelun of Sea and Sky is a major boon for the Modern Merfolk deck, a 3/4 Merfolk God that can shield its aquatic fellows with the ward ability from Strixhaven: School of Mages. Its price tag sits at $20.

Then, there's Subtlety, from the same cycle as Solitude. At no cost of mana, it can put a creature or planeswalker spell on its owner's library bottom. Effectively, it counters that spell, and can affect spells that normally cannot be countered. It's worth $17.70. And, as expected,  some of the retro reprints in blue are downright incredible, with Force of Negation being worth an incredible $300, and the reprint of Urza, Lord High artificer commanding the same price.

The Black Cards of Modern Horizons 2

Grief is a 3/2 with menace, and it can act as effective hand control when it hits the battlefield, with only land cards being safe from its grasp. It can serve as a no-mana Thoughtseize (which is saying a lot), so it's worth $33.31 as of this writing. Dauthi Voidwalker packs a lot of power into just two mana, being a 3/2 that's tough to block and impacts graveyards. Dauthi Voidwalker is currently worth $18.56.

Meanwhile, Damn is a tricky removal spell that can hit one creature for BB, or go multicolor and hit every enemy creature at the cost of {2}WWBB in a deck with Orzhov colors. Damn commands a price of $9.23. Plague Engineer is a retro foil reprint that can greatly harm tribal decks, and this thing is worth $30. Other noteworthy black cards included the retro foil reprint of Changeling Outcast ($9), and the main set's Tourach, Dread Cantor ($8.32). It even has kicker and protection from white.

The Red Cards of Modern Horizons 2

mtg cards

The red cards of this set aren't quite as valuable as the blue or black ones, but a few red cards do stand out. Imperial Recruiter returns with a $17.67 price tag, a fine way to tutor for a must-have creature with power 2 or lower and get the deck going. Ragavan, Nimble Pilfreer is a Monkey Pirate with an incredible $50 price tag, and this tiny legendary creature can damage a player to get a treasure token and exile the top card of the player's library (and cast it). This Monkey even has the Dash ability for extra speed.

Fury isn't nearly as impactful as the other evoke cards, but it can deal four damage divided among several targets to generate decent card advantage, and is worth just under $6. Goblin Engineer is a retro foil reprint, highly useful for artifact-based decks, and worth $9.48. Magmatic Sinkhole ($4) and Shenanigans ($4.25) are also notable retro foil reprints in red.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General is part of Modern Horizons 2's effort to make the Squirrel tribe legitimate, and is worth an impressive $20.95 as a mythic rare.

Other notable retro foil reprints include Ayula, Queen Among Bears ($14.74), Deep Forest Hermit ($13) and Scale Up ($7.90). In the main set, Sanctum Weaver is worth $6, and Thrasta, Tempest's Roar has a price tag of $7.

The First Sliver is by far the most valuable multicolored card, at $85.13, since granting cascade to all Slivers can generate some incredible value. Ice-Fang Coatl, at $40, is another notable retro foil reprint. As for brand-new cards, Grist, the Hunger Tide is a creative and unusual planeswalker that's worth $16.83 right now. Then, there's Garth One-Eye, a WUBRG 5/5 that can cast famous old cards with its tap ability, once for each. Incredibly, Garth allows players to make a copy of the famous Black Lotus. Garth is worth $13.79 as of this writing. Mirari's Wake is also fairly valuable, at $7.38, and there's also Dakkon, Shadow Slayer ($11.73) and Geyadrone Dihada ($11.03). This set's Planeswalkers are truly impressive.
