Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, has been one of the most successful new Marvel characters in recent memory. After years of appearances in comics and cartoons, the young Avenger is set to maker her live-action debut in her own upcoming series on Disney+.  While the announcement of the Ms. Marvel TV series also indicated that she would make a cinematic debut sooner than later,it's an exciting time for the character and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. However, it begs one big question: What does Ms. Marvel mean for the Inhumans?

In comics, Kamala herself is an Inhuman, gaining her shape-shifting powers after being exposed to their Terrigen Mist. She debuted during part of a big push that saw the Inhumans become some of Marvel's most visible characters. However, many of those comics and the since-canceled Inhumans show they preceded were not terribly well-received by fans or critics. Subsequent productions have failed to reference the show, but if Ms. Marvel could force the MCU to take another look at the Inhumans.

Who Is Ms. Marvel?

Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American girl in Jersey City who, while sneaking out to a party one night, becomes enveloped in Terrigen Mist. After undergoing Terrigenesis in a cocoon, she has a vision of Captain America, Iron Man, and Carol Danvers. Wanting to be more like the latter, she emerges from the cocoon as Carol in her Ms. Marvel-era costume. She learns that she has the power to shape shift any part of her body, eventually taking the Ms. Marvel moniker and becoming a local superhero.

After becoming aware of her existence, the Inhuman queen Medusa sends the dog Lockjaw to guard her. This leads to Kamala eventually coming to New Attilan and learning of her Inhuman heritage, explaining her powers. While this is obviously an important part of the character's back story, could Marvel think to adapt it to screen, especially when Inhumans was so readily panned.

Accept It and Move On

Inhumans

One step that Marvel could take would be to simply continue upon the threads set up in the Inhumans show, utilizing this and the same actors to establish Kamala's supporting cast in the universe. This might initially draw some ire from fans who, like most viewers, didn't care for Inhumans. It would allow Marvel to prove, however, that it isn't in the business of rebooting things simply because they failed to work the first time. This would establish some brand integrity, furthering that it all is, indeed connected.

If the Inhumans Royal Family cast and characters were used in this series in a superior fashion, it might actually redeem them. Though their show would still be looked at poorly, the actors and characters would be given a more fair chance by virtue of being a part of a much better product. This could be similar to Iron Fist's much better reception in the second season of his Netflix series and in the second season of Luke Cage.

Reboot the Inhumans

Another option that might be more pleasing to fans is to simply act as if the Inhumans show didn't happen. This would be easy, as not only was it never referenced again, but it actually failed to connect with the Inhuman related plot threads established in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Thus, Marvel could recast the characters, erasing the stain of their previous use from official canon. Giving them different, much higher quality costumes would also go a long way to both differentiate from the previous mistake and regain fan interest and trust.

Two drawbacks would be that fans might fear that Marvel would become reboot happy with less than successful or tertiary productions, perhaps including the Marvel Netflix shows. It would also lay the blame of Inhumans' poor quality on the actors, who were typically seen as simply having bad material to work with as Anson Mount and Iwan Rheon were notably heralded as the show's few bright spots.

Change Ms. Marvel's Origins

A less likely, but still possible outcome would be to scrap Ms. Marvel's connection to the Inhumans entirely. This would eliminate any need to tie the character to a franchise that has now failed across several media. One route to take would be to make Ms. Marvel a mutant. Marvel Studios now has the rights to mutants and other X-Men related concepts, and this high-profile series would be the perfect one to begin establishing the X-gene. The fear and hatred that mutants face would also fit in well with the adolescent themes of Ms. Marvel as a character, who herself is part of a minority as a Muslim Pakistani girl.

Given her name, a connection to Captain Marvel could also be established. Kamala in the comics is a huge fan of Carol Danvers, but has little to no conceptual connection to her. Having her powers be the result of Kree experimentation or other cosmic explanation would be a way to further the "next generation" feel of upcoming Marvel projects, as well as sever ties with the Inhumans.

Marvel Studios' Ms. Marvel is currently in development for Disney+. An official release date has not been revealed, nor is any casting information currently available.
