After she inherited Danvers' former Ms. Marvel title, Kamala had the opportunity to team up with her hero to save her brother Aamir from her friend-turned-enemy, Kamran.

Carol acted as a mentor figure for Kamala, encouraging her and partnering with her from time to time. Captain Marvel's influence on Kamala is one of the most important aspects of the new Ms. Marvel character, as Carol gives her a heroic model to emulate.

After being hit during a battle, Viv went haywire and exploded, destroying Kamala's school and injuring many of those inside – Ms. Marvel included.
