The following contains major spoilers for Ms. Marvel & Wolverine #1, available now from Marvel.

Ever since she first stepped into the world of super heroics, Kamala Khan has proven to be capable of holding her own against almost anything the Marvel Universe has to throw at her. Of course, Ms. Marvel has also had plenty of help from more than a few allies along the way. While not every amazing Marvel team-up Kamala has been a part of has lasted, that isn't the fault of anyone in particular. In fact, Ms. Marvel has just gotten a chance to reconnect with one of the first teenage heroes she ever joined forces with, only to receive a soul-crushing lesson in how complicated her life has become.

When Kamala Khan takes a trip to visit the Krakoan Treehouse, she finds a familiar face in the form of Logan. Despite their previous encounters being friendly enough, Ms. Marvel & Wolverine #1 (by Jody Houser, Ze Carlos, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Travis Lanham) sees the latter overtly ignore the former, until Kamala discovers a threat to mutant kind. Before long, a whole host of X-Men has arrived on the scene to help get to the bottom of the swarm of robotic insects Ms. Marvel uncovered, including Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. Running into Cyclops isn't nearly as awkward as it could have been, though it still isn't what Kamala had hoped for. Then again, the time they spent together was a lifetime ago for one of them, and it wasn't Ms. Marvel.

Though Cyclops has been a part of the Marvel Universe for far longer than Ms. Marvel, it was his youthful self that Kamala got to know the best fighting alongside. Following the events of the second superhuman Civil War, many of the younger members of the Avengers were left disillusioned. As such, they joined Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, and Nova in forming the Champions. Together, these young heroes vowed to fight for a better tomorrow by learning from the mistakes of the past. When the then time-displaced Cyclops heard their call, he answered by asking to join the Champions in their mission.

Unfortunately, the reputation of Cyclops' older self made many of the Champions hesitant to accept him. Most obviously there was the matter of the damage that the elder Scott had wrought throughout the decades. There were also Cyclops' various abrupt shifts in demeanor, not to mention whether letting the younger Cyclops in would give the Champions' detractors an edge. Ultimately, Cyclops became a member of the Champions and even stayed with them for well over a year. Much to Ms. Marvel's chagrin, however, the experience wasn't enough to change who the Cyclops she knew best would grow up into.

Kamala is still hopeful that she can find time to build lasting, meaningful relationships with her fellow heroes, most of all those she effectively grew up with. This makes it all the more painful that Cyclops is entirely incapable of doing the same. Not only is he an adult now, but he is also a political leader on top of his superheroic duties. As harsh as it might sound, Scott is busy keeping his people alive against one attempted genocide after another, which doesn't leave much time for catching up with old friends.

The fact that Scott has to leave almost as soon as he arrived isn't the only thing irking Ms. Marvel, but it is certainly the most obvious. Whether this is indicative of how gruff or uncaring Cyclops is as a person is up for debate, yet there is no denying that he and Kamala have ended up leading vastly different lives from one another. For Kamala, the Scott of today is a friend who she will likely never be able to really reconnect with, while for Cyclops she is a reminder of who he used to want to be. Hopefully, they will find the time to prove both of themselves wrong before the time they spent together is relegated to complete obscurity.
