Warning: The following article contains spoilers from The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #14 by Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, Ian Herring, and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

Since the onset of Outlawed, Ms. Marvel has been out of the picture and for very good reason. When Ailana Kabua made a visit to Kamala Khan's school, the Champions led a stake-out to protect the young activist from any potential threats. Faced with both armed mercenaries and a dragon, an accidental blast from Power Man led Viv Vision to self-destruct, creating a huge explosion. Kamala was forced to shield Ailana within a collapsing building, falling into a coma as a result.

Because of this incident, Kamala became a central figure in the argument to outlaw teen heroes. Now in Magnificent Ms. Marvel #14, Kamala learns just how difficult death would actually be for her as she comes face to face with her past.

Terrigenesis

Kamala's first death technically came at the very start of her origin. Following a battle with Thanos, the king of the Inhumans, Black Bolt, ignited the Terrigen Bomb in the heart of Attilan. As the Terrigen Mist began to spread, people from around the world underwent a process known as Terrigenesis, in which their Inhuman genetics emerged and transformed them into super-powered beings. Walking home from a party, Kamala was one of the individuals to experience this transformation.

In her case, Kamala had a vision of Captain Marvel, Captain America, and Iron Man, who warned that her life was about to change. Described as a "total reboot", she emerged from the cocoon, dressed in the black Ms. Marvel outfit that Carol Danvers once wore. Looking back on this moment, Kamala's own inner monologue sees this as their first death. When the human part of her died, she was reborn as the inhuman who would become Ms. Marvel.

Resurrection At The Hands of Mephisto

Ms. Marvel also faced death as the leader of the Champions. As seen in 2019's Champions #1, from Jim Zub and Steven Cummings, the team faced a major defeat at the hands of Zzzax, a monster made of pure electricity. Although the team was able to save some lives, Miles Morales and Amadeus Cho were the only ones left standing at the end of the battle, as both Kamala and Viv, along with plenty of civilians, were killed in a blast from Zzzax. In that moment, when all hope seemed lost, the devil Mephisto appeared with an offer.

Unlike his usual deals, Mephisto offered this one for free, using his reality-altering abilities to reverse time. However, unknown to Miles, his actions to ensure Kamala and Viv's survival came at the cost of a bystander that Miles had saved in their original battle. His guilt eventually led Kamala to learn the truth, causing her to doubt her own leadership abilities and consider the possibility of quitting the team. Of course, all of this was part of Mephisto's plan to instill doubt within these young heroes, which came to an end when the team came together in battle against his son.

Stormranger

Unlike the other occasions, Ms. Marvel didn't experience any form of death, but actually created another version of herself. While fulfilling her role as the Destined One and saving the people of an alternate future reality, Ms. Marvel was bonded with a Kree Stormranger Nanosuit that gave her greater protection, enabled her to create weaponry, and could interact with other forms of technology. Additionally, acting like the Venom symbiote which also shares some Kree connections, the suit could emerge whenever needed.

Similar to Peter's own reason for splitting with his alien suit, Kamala also came into conflict with her suit when it began to try to permanently eliminate her foes. Stopping its many attempts, the suit merely copied Kamala's look and mind as it went on its own way to remove any dangers. Having to track the suit down, Ms. Marvel returned to her classic cloth suit and the suit self-destructed in battle. Although gone for now, the suit could always return and go on to outlive its original wearer.
