The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a brand new hero with the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. While Kamala Khan is a beloved hero in the comics, some MCU fans may not know about her origin or story. While the new series looks to be adopting the same elements that make the character both relatable and adored, her powers may be a different story. Following new artwork that reveals Kamala with a purple gauntlet, speculation has erupted about whether or not she will have the same origin or abilities. Any truth to these claims remains to be seen, but in the meantime, it's a great opportunity to learn how Kamala Khan became Ms. Marvel.

To fully understand the nature of Kamala's abilities, it's imperative to go back to the 2013 event series, Infinity. The mini-series ran for six issues and is told in two segments: the Avengers taking on an ancient race known as The Builders, and Thanos' onslaught of Earth to find his son, Thane.

During Thanos' attack, he gives the Inhumans a chance to spare their home of Attilan by presenting Thanos with the heads of young Inhuman children. When Thanos comes to collect, he only sees their king, Black Bolt, who uses his devastating scream to destroy Attilan and activate the Terrigen Bomb. The bomb releases a Terrigen Mist that bathes Earth, turning humans who have latent Inhuman genes into Inhumans. This happens to Kamala when she sneaks out to prove to the cooler kids at her school that she isn't as weird as they say.

Once the mist reaches Kamala, she is covered in a cocoon and undergoes terrigenesis. Upon emerging, she learns that she can shapeshift, looking exactly like her idol, Carol Danvers. From there, her powers continue to evolve, and she calls herself a polymorph. With her polymorph abilities, Kamala can elongate herself, shapeshift, shrink, embiggen and even heal. Kamala almost immediately uses her new abilities to save one of the kids that were bullying her and decides to use her abilities for good.

As Kamala grew more adept at using her abilities and started making a name for herself as Ms. Marvel, she garnered the attention of other Marvel heroes -- most importantly the same people that inadvertently created her: the Inhumans. After meeting them, she made friends with the teleporting canine, Lockjaw, and later became a member of both the Avengers and the Champions with her friends Sam Alexander (Nova) and Miles Morales (Spider-Man). Since then, Kamala has continued to use her abilities as Ms. Marvel, saving countless lives in the process.

Kamala Khan's powers show her limitless potential both literally and figuratively. She shows immense power with her abilities and continues to inspire each time she goes out to save lives. Yet, as she becomes more recognized, she never lets the weight of being a hero bring her down, even when it nearly kills her. While the new Disney+ series may not show her powers in the exact way they are introduced in the source material, there's still the chance to show how they affect her character. No matter what they are or how she obtains them, Kamala's powers are an extension of herself, and so long as she is still the optimistic hero from the comics, she will remain a fan favorite on the small screen.

Starring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/the titular hero, Disney+'s Ms. Marvel series has yet to receive a release date.
