A new description of Disney+'s upcoming Ms. Marvel series seemingly clarifies the changes to Kamala Khan's powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.A recent issue of Empire featured an interview with Sana Amanat, one of Khan's co-creators. The article itself provides clarification on Ms. Marvel's new powers, saying, "Khan obtains her own cosmic superstrength and ability to manifest purple crystals via a pair of bangles."RELATED: Marvel Reveals Best Look at Ms. Marvel's Costume to Date at International Event

Created by Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, Jamie McKelvie and Stephen Wacker, Kamala first appeared in 2013's Captain Marvel #14. In the comics, Kamala is an Inhuman whose powers are activated by the Terrigen Mists. Ms. Marvel's abilities allow her to alter her physical shape, which confers a number of major benefits and powers. However, Ms. Marvel's powers in the MCU seem to be much more energy based than in the comics.

It's not clear at this time just what the purple bangles the article refers to might be. There's been some speculation Ms. Marvel will use the Nega-Bands, a powerful Marvel weapon that has deep ties to Captain Marvel. At this time, it's not confirmed if Ms. Marvel is indeed using the Nega-Bands or why Marvel Studios opted to change Khan's powers, though there's speculation the choice was made to distinguish her from Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. Regardless of the reason, reaction to Marvel changing Khan's powers has been decidedly mixed.

Ms. Marvel sees Jersey City teenager Khan, a major fan of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), struggling to fit in when she gains superpowers of her own. Currently, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding the show's plot. However, the project will also feature Aramis Knight as Kareem/Red Dagger, Matt Lintz as Bruno Carrelli and Yasmeen Fletcher as Nakia Bahadir.

While Ms. Marvel will be Khan's first appearance in the MCU, it's definitely not the last. Iman Vellani, who plays Khan, is scheduled to appear in The Marvels. Scheduled for Feb. 17, 2023, The Marvels brings Khan together with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Plot details on that movie, which is directed by Nia DaCosta from a script by Megan McDonnell, are scarce at this time.

Created by Bisha K. Ali, Ms. Marvel premieres on June 8. The series will run for six episodes.
