WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #14 by Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, Ian Herring, and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now

Since the onset of Outlawed, the Champions have been down one of their most notable members: Ms. Marvel, who was taken off the board early when she was injured while protecting the life of another teenager in her civilian identity.

After being knocked into a comatose state and hospitalized, Kamala Khan has finally awakened -- and she's ready to return to her role as Ms. Marvel.

Kamala in a coma

Outlawed began when the Champions tried to protect the Coles Academic High School from a dragon attack. During the chaos, an accidental blast from Power Man damaged Viv Vision, causing her to malfunction and unleash a torrent of electrical energy. Ironheart and Wasp were forced to use an EMP to disrupt her systems and shut her down, but the process caused a massive explosion that seemed to destroy Viv. Meanwhile, the destruction led to serious damage to the high school. In her civilian identity as Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel was able to protect a young activist named Ailana Kabua from being injured. However, Kamala was struck by the falling rubble and was left in a comatose state.

While she's been healing in the hospital, her name has been affixed to a law that specifically targets young superheroes, including the creation of a new task force designed to capture and arrest any underage heroes breaking this new mandate: C.R.A.D.L.E. While other young heroes like Ironheart and Spider-Man have been dealing with C.R.A.D.L.E. and their attempts to capture them, Kamala has remained in her hospital bed. Unconscious, she's unaware of the drama brewing within her closest circles -- Aamir has begun railing against superheroes in general, while Zoe lashes out at the Champions for not bothering to visit their teammate. In reality, one of them has made sure to sneak in to see her -- Miles Morales, who has gradually become one of Kamala's best friends within the superhero community.

The whole time, Kamala is within her own mind, finally coming to terms with the fact that being a hero means risking your life -- and that her Inhuman biology means she can always come back from the brink if she's got the will to do so. Deciding that she needs to fight for her friends after Miles speaks to her, Kamala finally wakes up from her current state, catching a relieved Miles by surprise. Although she's still in pain, Kamala is quick to get out of bed and declare that she's not going to wait around, especially with people using her name to attack her friends.

It's likely that Ms. Marvel, while winded, will still be making her grand return to the streets soon enough, but she'll be targeted just like all the others. As she realized in her dreams, keeping her identity from her family has led to too many problems in her life. Kamala might be able to bring the entirety of Outlawed to a halt if she exposed her identity, especially with the new law being named after one of Marvel's most prevalent teen heroes. But regardless of what she does next, it's still exciting to see Kamala back in action.
