Actor Iman Vellani debuts as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the upcoming Disney+ TV show Ms. Marvel. The significance of this pop culture property existing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not lost on Vellani.

"The fact that the show is being made and they’re including this character in the MCU is [what’s important]," Vellani said to Variety. "I don’t really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani — it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough."

Iman Vellani's work as Ms. Marvel serves as her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it won't be her last. Vellani is set to reprise the role of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the movie The Marvels. She shares the spotlight of that film with Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, respectively.

Long before her Disney+ TV show, the character Kamala Khan first appeared in Captain Marvel #14 in August 2013.  She would subsequently headline her own comic series, Ms. Marvel, in 2014, breaking new ground for Muslim superheroes in the world of Marvel Comics. The character would not stick exclusively to comic books for long, with Khan eventually appearing in other projects like the animated TV show Avengers Assemble as well as starring in the video game Marvel's Avengers.

Ms. Marvel has yet to receive a premiere date.
