Fans of Ms. Marvel aren't happy about the change to the Marvel hero's powers in her upcoming Disney+ series.Following the release of the first trailer for Marvel Studios' Ms. Marvel series, fans are disappointed by the change in Kamala Khan's powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they will differ from her powers in the comics. While some fans drew comparisons to the DC hero Green Lantern, others noted that the removal of Kamala's "stretchy" powers might be due to another hero joining the MCU, Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, having similar abilities as well.
Marvel Studios recently released the first teaser for Ms. Marvel starring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, which will mark her MCU debut ahead of her appearance in the 2023 Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels. In the comics, Kamala's powers include stretching, shrinking and growing, while the trailer highlights the hero's updated powers, which consist of purple cosmic energy that can form shields and manifest a giant fist like she is able to do in the comics.
Ms. Marvel's power change was teased leading up to the release of the trailer. Promotional posters released in October 2021 depicted the hero using a new set of powers, with one image labeled "Crystal Smash" depicting her giant fist. In November 2021, Marvel Studios released the first footage for the series which confirmed the character's power change in live-action, showing Ms. Marvel using her purple, energy-based powers as opposed to her comics-accurate "stretchy" ones.
Created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson and artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie, Kamala Khan made her Marvel Comics debut in 2012. The Disney+ series will, like the comics, follow the Pakistani-American teen as the titular hero, who was Marvel's first Muslim character to star in her own series and will be the MCU's first onscreen Muslim hero.
"The fact that the show is being made and theyâre including this character in the MCU is [what's important]," Vellani said in August 2021 on being the MCU's first Muslim hero. "I don't really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani -- it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough."
Ms. Marvel lands on Disney+ a month prior on June 8.
