Newcomer Imon Vellani has been cast as Kamala Khan in the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Ms. Marvel.

Marvel Studios has stayed firm in selecting the right actor to take on the role of Ms. Marvel, even if that person doesn't have many acting credits to their name. Though she may not be a huge Hollywood name, Vellani has been active in bringing diversity to the industry. She was a member of the Next Wave Committee at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, helping to add important tags to films.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, best known for their work on Bad Boys for Life, will be serving as directors on Ms. Marvel. Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will also helm the series, as will Meera Menon. Menon's credits include directing episodes of The Walking Dead, The Punisher, Titans, Dirty John and Outlander.

Ms. Marvel will follow Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan as the titular hero. Khan made her comics debut in 2012, becoming Marvel's first Muslim character to star in her own title. In the MCU, Khan will become Marvel's first onscreen Muslim hero. The character was a breakout success, going on to lead her own team of fellow teenage heroes in 2017's comic series The Champions. According to Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige, Ms. Marvel is only the beginning for Kamala Khan as the character has a future in the MCU films.

The Disney+ series is part of several shows that will expand the MCU. The current slate includes WandaVision, set for a 2020 release; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, both slated for 2021.

Ms. Marvel is expected to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
