The video game-turned-movie "Need for Speed" proved no match for "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" and "300: Rise of an Empire." The film, starring "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul, came in third at the North American box office with $17.8 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story overseas for "Need for Speed" was much different, as the film brought in $45.6 million in 40 territories, including $21.2 million in China. So far the film has brought in $63.4 million worldwide.

In its second week of release, the animated "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" jumped from No. 2 to No. 1 at the North American box office, bringing in $21.2 million. The film is based on "Peabody's Improbable History," a segment created by cartoonist Ted Key for the 1960s television program "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show." The DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox film has brought in $63.2 million thus far.

Last week's No. 1 movie, "300: Rise of an Empire," dropped to No. 2 with $19.1 million. So far the film has brought in $78.3 million in North America and $236.3 million worldwide. The first "300" film, which was directed by Zack Snyder and based on the Frank Miller graphic novel of the same name, brought in $210 million domestically and $456 million worldwide when it was released in 2007.

"Veronica Mars," which raised $5.7 million on Kickstarter last year, opened in a limited number of theaters and debuted digitally on Friday. It grossed $2 million to tie with "The Monuments Men" for No. 10 and was holding down the No. 3 spot on the iTunes sales charts at press time. The film is based on the TV show of the same name and reunited creator Rob Thomas with most of the original cast, including Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni.
