As has been the case with most every year, 2022 promises to be an exciting year for superhero movies. The Batman, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Across The Spider-Verse Part 1, all have fans waiting in eager anticipation. However, 2022 will have plenty more films to offer than just comic book adaptations.

10 The Black Phone Is Scott Derrickson's Return To Horror

Movies The Black Phone Header

Scott Derrickson made his name in the horror genre. He dipped out to direct Doctor Strange, and has returned to his roots with The Black Phone. Self-adapted by Joe Hill from his short story 20th Century Ghosts, The Black Phone follows a young boy abducted by a serial killer. While in captivity, he discovers a phone that allows him to communicate with the killer's past victims.

The trailer hints at similar themes to Derrickson's previous film Sinister. The Black Phone has a human antagonist - ironically enough, played by Sinister's Ethan Hawke. The Black Phone earned rave reviews out of Fantastic Fest - the best of Derrickson's career. Originally slated for release in February, it has been pushed back to the summer. All the more time to get excited.

9 Blonde Is A Marilyn Monroe Biopic From Andrew Dominik

Blonde Ana De Armas

If there's one type of film which is just as much "dime a dozen" it's biopics. They're the superhero movies of Awards Season. As such, it's easy to be weary of Netflix's Blonde, starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe. Monroe even had a previous mediocre biopic, My Week With Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams.

What makes this an exception is that Andrew Dominik is directing. Between The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly, Dominik has a thing for deconstructing myths. This makes Monroe, the ultimate Hollywood starlet, an excellent subject for him.

8 Disappointment Blvd. Is Ari Aster's Next Film With A24

Joaquin Phoenix Disappointment Blvd

With just two features under his belt, Ari Aster has established himself as one of the most exciting new directors. Hereditary and Midsommar updated Rosemary's Baby and The Wicker Man for the new century, repackaged with a focus on familial trauma and a sick sense of humor.

His next project, Disappointment Blvd. stars Joaquin Phoenix and an array of great supporting players. Details are slim thus far, beyond it being billed as a horror-comedy following "one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time." Disappointment Blvd.'s talent is exciting enough.

7 Everything Everywhere All At Once Is A More Human Look At The Multiverse

Evelyn in the multiverse, appearing like cracked glass in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The multiverse isn't just for comic books. The next film by Swiss Army Man directors Daniels Kwan & Scheinert is a Michelle Yeoh vehicle. As with their last feature, Everything Everywhere All At Once will be distributed by A24.

Yeoh stars as Evelyn Wang, a woman who finds herself being scattered across the multiverse, thrust into the lives of her counterparts. Everything Everywhere will feature an all-Asian main cast, excluding Jamie Lee Curtis as a "villainous bureaucrat." Seeing two actresses as accomplished as Yeoh and Curtis square off is sure to be a match to remember.

6 The Fabelmans Will Feature Steven Spielberg Looking Back At His Childhood

Steven Spielberg behind a camera

A trend emerging in movie-making is accomplished directors looking back on the time and place they grew up in. They spin a story out of that - sometimes autobiographical, sometimes not. Some examples include Roma, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and just in 2021, Licorice Pizza and Belfast.

2022 will see Steven Spielberg join the trend with The Fabelmans. Co-written with his frequent collaborator Tony Kushner, The Fabelmans will be a coming-of-age story based on Spielberg's childhood in Arizona. West Side Story was the latest proof that age hasn't dulled Spielberg's innate instinct for movie magic, and seeing him deal with a subject so personal is exciting.

5 Killers Of The Flower Moon Is Martin Scorsese's Next Film

Killers Of The Flower Moon

During the latter half of the 20th century, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro became the most formidable director/actor team. At the turn of the century, Leonardo DiCaprio stepped up as Scorsese's new leading man. Scorsese's most recent film, The Irishman, reunited him with De Niro. Killers Of The Flower Moon is due in 2022 and will feature him working with both actors on the same movie for the first time.

Adapted from David Grann's eponymous book, Killers Of The Flower Moon details the FBI's 1920s investigation into murders of the members of the Osage tribe. Martin Scorsese is the patron saint of cinema - it's impossible not to get excited for any project he directs.

4 Knives Out 2 Follows Up On One Of 2019's Best Films

Knives Out 2 Logo

Rian Johnson's Agatha Christie homage Knives Out was one of the best films of 2019. As a mid-budget genre film, it was the kind of crowd-pleaser almost no one makes anymore. Audiences should be thankful then that there's more on the way. The sequel will see Daniel Craig return as Benoit Blanc leading just as amazing an ensemble as last time.

Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr, Madelyn Cline, and Ethan Hawke. The sequel has yet to receive an official title, but a mind as creative as Johnson's is sure to come up with something better than "Knives Out 2."

3 Mission Impossible 7 Is The Next Entry In Hollywood's Most Reliable Action Franchise

Mission Impossible 7 Header

Mission: Impossible has become the most reliable blockbuster series in Hollywood. Anchored by Tom Cruise's addiction to death-defying stunts, Mission: Impossible has gone from different directors to operating under the sturdy stewardship of Christopher McQuarrie. The next two entries have been shot back to back and after long delays, Chapter 7 will arrive in 2022.

In addition to the regular cast (Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson), Mission: Impossible 7 will feature newcomers Hayley Atwell and Esai Morales plus returning guests Henry Czerny and Vanessa Kirby.

2 Nope Will Be Jordan Peele's Third Directorial Effort

Jordan Peele Nope

10 years ago, few would have predicted that half of Key & Peele would be one of the most exciting directors in Hollywood. Jordan Peele made an astonishing debut with Get Out and followed up with a worthy successor in Us.

Peele's films mix social commentary with imaginative premises and truly scary horror. Even before Peele helmed a Twilight Zone reboot, comparisons to Rod Serling were obvious. 2022 will see his next film, Nope. Like Peele's previous films, Nope's premise thus far is vague, but the mystery is part of the fun.

1 The Northman Is Robert Eggers' Latest Historical Film

The Northman. 2022. Official release poster

Like Peele, Robert Eggers is a director coming off two acclaimed features whose third effort will be released in 2022. The Northman will feature Alexander Skarsgård as a Viking warrior out to avenge the murder of his father.

The Northman follows the same naming scheme as The Witch and The Lighthouse. It's also another period piece, and much further in the past to boot. Eggers' first two films were straight horror films, The Northman is a revenge epic with seemingly only incidental horror elements.
