Ōma Cinema is using striking, unique architecture to build the cinema concept of today, and it looks suspiciously like the Galactic Senate from Star WarsIn the face of COVID-19, movies have been delayed indefinitely, productions have gone on hiatus, and the very existence of the movie-going experience has been called into question. Both independent theaters and major chains are taking heavy financial losses, and audiences feel much safer enjoying movies in the comfort of their own living rooms. With that said, a new cinema is announcing its plans to change the film-going experience forever, even amidst COVID concerns.

Designed by architect Pierre Chican, the Ōma Cinema concept aims to maximize comfort while sustaining the visual experience regardless of where a moviegoer sits. Not only is the movie screen massive -- making most seats the "good seats" -- but the seating is divided into rounded booths for a more private communal experience. Sporting events and concert arenas have box seats and exclusive areas, and Ōma Cinema aims to bring those to the movies. It just so happens that the theater's designs are incredibly similar to the Senate from the prequels, mainly seen in Revenge of the Sith. The rounded "pods" lined with neon lights certainly look futuristic, but the comparison to Star Wars' space-age auditorium is the icing on the cake.

The Senate from Star Wars is a circular room with seating on all sides. The seats are aimed at the center "stage" where politicians address the crowd from. In Star Wars, the individual booths can also float around independently for parliament debates and whatnot. The theater doesn't have as many pods, but they are laid out similarly opposite a massive curved movie screen. It's a gorgeous, futuristic take on the theater experience that can help immerse the viewer in ways that only few theaters can.

Whether Star Wars influenced the design directly is unclear, however, the comparisons are quite favorable -- even though the Galactic Senate is where the Emperor's reign of terror first began. And it's possible the similarities are intentional because an Ōma concept image uses a still from Star Wars Battlefront on one of the movie screens. Regardless of that, though, the concept is designed to be customizable too, tailored to the needs of individual crowds and theaters. Each pod will have personalized access to amenities like concessions and even table service for dine-in movies. The concept even features lounge and bar access for VIP customers. This theater could turn a night at the movies into quite the lavish (and likely expensive) experience. It might not be as grand as a visit to the Galactic Senate, but for some moviegoers, it might be just what they're looking for.

In reality, a concept like this can both hurt and help the theater experience. A trip to the cinema is already an expensive outing in most places, so a theater like this may make a trip to the movies less accessible. At the same time, though, it also makes movie-going a bit more personal. In a post-pandemic world, it even helps with social distancing, as audience members will only sit near the people they bring in with them voluntarily.

The theater is still just a concept, and it will likely be a long time before audiences get to enjoy one. With that said, though, if this is the future of movie theaters, it looks like the place to be, especially for a Revenge of the Sith rewatch.
