In the history of cinema, moviegoers have had the pleasure of seeing some of the best pieces of work. But not every film can be top-notch and fans occasionally get stuck seeing an average or less than the average movie. Many movies are loved by some, and despised by others. While it's a matter of opinion, most masterpieces can be appreciated by all film fans.

Movies can be enjoyed by fans who still think something is missing. Sometimes the smallest factor can determine whether a movie is a masterpiece or if it's a film that just falls short of being legendary. While there have been a lot of near masterful films of all genres, movies of the past few decades missed being a masterpiece because of one specific flaw.

10 Spider-Man 3 Fell Short Because Of Venom's Casting & His Forced Inclusion In The Movie

spider-man 3 2007

The epic conclusion to Sam Raimi's trilogy, Spider-Man 3, had so much potential but a questionable casting choice for a fan-favorite villain upset many loyal fans. The talented Topher Grace was cast as Spider-Man's archenemy, Venom. Venom is usually depicted as a larger-than-life character with a real mean streak. Grace has even admitted in several interviews that he was the wrong man for the job, coming off as more annoying and less intimidating. Venom's intimidation is a must to bring the scary symbiote to life. In addition to wrong casting, Venom was shoehorned into Spider-Man 3 and his story was extremely rushed into an already convoluted movie.

9 Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice Was Solid Until The Infamous Martha Scene

Another superhero movie that had the makings of a masterpiece, Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice was hurt by Jesse Eisenberg's casting as Lex Luthor. In addition, Batman V. Superman had one of the most ridiculous scenes in the history of film. Eisenberg's portrayal of Lex was over the top and too childish to be taken seriously as one of the greatest criminal minds of all time.

However, the biggest transgression of Batman V. Superman was the ending of the legendary fight between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. Superman yelled out that Batman was letting them kill his mother, named Martha. Batman also had a mother named Martha, and for some reason completely stopped fighting Superman when he heard the familiar name.

8 Star Wars: The Last Jedi Focused Too Much Time On Finn & Rose's Boring Sidestory

The Last Jedi caused a major rift between Star Wars fans when it arrived in 2017. Luke Skywalker's defeated attitude helped cause the rift. The real downfall revolved around two of the newer characters, Rose and Finn. Finn was well-received in 2015's The Force Awakens. But when he was paired with the annoying new character, Rose, the two went on a side mission that led them to a casino planet. The plot line was longer than necessary and diminished other important aspects - such as Luke training Rey, and Kylo Ren's betrayal of Supreme Leader Snoke.

7 Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi Would Have Been Perfect Without The Cuddly Ewoks

return of the jedi star wars

Star Wars: A New Hope hit theaters in 1977 and was a huge success among fans and critics alike, as was the subsequent sequel The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. The epic conclusion was The Return Of The Jedi, which hit theaters in 1983 and was an amazing end to a beloved franchise - except for some cuddly little creatures that had no reason fighting The Empire. While they were cute, the Ewoks shouldn't have played such a pivotal role in the Rebel Alliance's defeat of the dreadful Empire. Return Of The Jedi's Ewoks should have been innocent creatures that needed protection from the Rebel's and not furry little soldiers that took down the universe's biggest threat with rocks and sticks.

6 The Amazing Spider-Man Was A Strong Reboot But The Lizard's Awful CGI Was Cringeworthy

the amazing spider-man 2012

After Spider-Man 3's disappointment in 2007, Sam Raimi left the franchise and Spider-Man was rebooted by Marc Webb in 2012. Starring Andrew Garfield as the new web-slinger, The Amazing Spider-Man was an updated take on the character and featured some unique twists. Garfield was a strong Spider-Man, but an even better Peter Parker, and Emma Stone was perfectly cast as Peter's love interest, Gwen Stacy. The Amazing Spider-Man was well made and had a strong story. Unfortunately, the main villain's CGI was awful and the deadly Lizard looked more like a friendly dinosaur from the 1990s.

5 Zack Snyder's Justice League Was A Major Improvement But Was Way Too Long

After tragedy struck in Zack Snyder's personal life, his version of Justice League was seemingly lost and was replaced by Joss Whedon's disaster of a movie in 2017. Thankfully, Snyder was given a chance to finish his own version of Justice League and his much-improved cut of the film hit HBO Max in 2021. Zack Snyder's Justice League was entertaining and had several epic moments.

While it was a masterpiece, there were a lot of unneeded scenes and Zack Synder's Justice League's 4 1/2 hour run time was way too long. Regardless, it was still a huge improvement and many have called for the Snyder-verse to return to the DCEU.

4 Rogue One Was An Excellent Star Wars Story But Grand Moff Tarkin's & Leia's CGI Was Cartoony

rogue one star wars

Rogue One told new stories in an already familiar world - it was breathtaking and featured some of the best action in Star Wars history. Rogue One focused on an Empire scientist's daughter who would go to great lengths to give the Rebel Alliance a fighting chance in the battle for the universe. Unfortunately, Rogue One took place before the original Star Wars in the franchise's timeline, and two characters from the original were brought back using CGI. It did not look good. While it was fun seeing Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia before fans met them, it would have made more sense to recast them.

3 Avengers: Endgame Was The Near-Perfect Culmination Of The MCU But The Real Hulk Should Have Been More Involved

The cast of Avengers: Endgame on a poster.

Avengers: Endgame brought epic moments. From Captain America lifting Mjolnir to the snapped Avengers returning to face down Thanos and his army, Endgame was filled with countless memorable moments. The one nitpick was Mark Ruffalo's "Smart Hulk", which was a combination of Bruce Banner's brain in the Hulk's massive green body. While audiences did briefly see the real Hulk in the 2012 time travel sequence, Endgame should have capitalized on the original Hulk's popularity and let the true Jade Giant get his rematch with the Mad Titan.

2 The Dark Knight Rises Was The Epic Conclusion To Nolan's Batman Trilogy But Had Too Many Plotholes

the dark knight rises 2012

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy breathed new life into the Caped Crusader. Batman Begins was an astounding success and The Dark Knight is considered the greatest superhero movie to date. However, the conclusion of the trilogy fell short of expectations. The Dark Knight Rises is still an epic film and features some of the greatest spine-tingling moments in movie history, but there are some huge plot holes that are never explained. How does Officer Blake know Bruce Wayne is Batman so easily? Why don't the buried police officers look like they've been trapped in the sewers for months? Finally, how does Bruce get back to Gotham so quickly after being trapped in Bane's pit?

1 No Time To Die Was A Nice Sendoff For Daniel Craig's 007 But The Villain Wasn't A Real Threat

james bond no time to die

Daniel Craig's time as James Bond finally came to a conclusion in 2021 after several Covid-19 delays pushed back the release date. No Time To Die was a solid film with an emotional ending. Unfortunately, Bond's adversary in the movie couldn't hold a candle to Bond or past villains of Craig's 007. Played by Rami Malek, Lyutsifer Safin's family was killed by Bond's future girlfriend's father - a member of Blofield's evil SPECTRE organization. Safin looked pretty freaky with that white mask on at the beginning of No Time To Die, yet his nanobot biological weapon plan felt ridiculous. He kidnaps Bond's girlfriend and daughter at the end of the movie, but Bond dispatches Safin quite easily in a physical fight.
