Despite how popular a character may be, they're not always liked by everyone. In fact, some characters receive a surprising amount of hate, especially characters who come from slice-of-life anime. Whether it's the poor decisions they make or the fact that they appear too perfect, some anime protagonists that should be universally liked actually have a lot of haters.

However, there are also tons of slice-of-life protagonists who deserve every bit of hate they get. Their actions are inexcusable, and they often have personalities that are just incredibly unlikeable. When an anime features a character that fans just don't like, it makes it much harder for fans to enjoy the story no matter how good it may be.

10 Naho Takamiya Is Dense

Orange

Orange Naho crying

On the surface, Naho from Orange should be a great protagonist. She cares deeply about her friends and wants to help them. However, she is an incredibly dense protagonist who's prone to making the worst decisions in any given situation, which is incredibly frustrating for fans who can spot the obvious solutions.

Naho's inability to learn from her mistakes is also incredibly frustrating, especially since she's literally given a guide to saving Kakeru's life. The moment where she disregards Kakeru's feelings about his grandmother's health is the most annoying part of the series and why most fans have grown to hate her.

9 Taiga Aisaka Is Violent

Toradora!

Taiga looking smug from Toradora!

Taiga from Toradora! is a character that's easy for people to hate. She acts like a typical tsundere, but she lacks a likable personality, especially when she seems so ungrateful for everything Ryuuji does for her.

Characters who are violent towards others for seemingly no reason have also hasn't aged well, which is why characters like Taiga tend to get a lot of hate. What seems to frustrate fans the most is how she's able to win over Ryuuji in the end. For many, this isn't deserved and ruins what could have been a great romance anime.

8 Ayano Kannagi Is Whiny

Kaze No Stigma / Stigma Of The Wind

Ayano from Kaze no Stigma

Kaze No Stigma isn't an anime that a lot of people remember and that's probably because of how unlikeable the protagonist is. Ayano may be strong, but she is incredibly whiny and always seems to find something to yell about.

Ayano's hatred for the people around her is mostly unjustified, so it's hard for people to get on her side. Ayano also never changes as the series progresses, which often leads fans to drop the series. Most fans don't have the tolerance to deal with an unlikeable person like her.

7 Kazuya Kinoshita Is Annoying

Rent-A-Girlfriend

rent a girlfriend season 2 episode 8 kazuya plans for the date

The worst kind of characters are the ones who always feel sorry for themselves and Kazuya from Rent-a-Girlfriend embodies that personality in spades. Instead of creating ways for his character to improve the story finds more ways for him to push his misery onto others.

Kazuya constantly causes trouble for Mizuhara and never faces any real consequences, which is especially annoying. He also falls into the pervert trope and has no real redeeming qualities. The story may be entertaining, and the comedy is great, but anime fans have a tendency to drop this series because of how unbearable Kazuya is.

6 Natsuo Fujii Is Indecisive

Domestic Girlfriend

Fans of Domestic Girlfriend are on the fence about Natsuo and that's mainly because he has a lot of good and bad qualities. He's a decent guy who wants to help others, but that often gets overshadowed by how oblivious he is.

Natsuo's indecisiveness gets on fans' nerves, especially since most fans don't believe he even deserves the love of the people around him. Natsuo may have good qualities, but the fact that he always seems to make the wrong move is what makes fans hate him.

5 Haru Yoshida Is Childish

My Little Monster

Shizuku Mizutani and Haru Yoshida from My Little Monster looking at each other.

Fans of slice-of-life romance love a good slow-burn anime, but that doesn't mean they like it when the characters are constantly flip-flopping about their feelings for each other. The biggest issue with My Little Monster is Haru's tendency to love Shizuku when it's most convenient.

Haru is incredibly childish, which often leaves fans cringing when he makes stupid decisions. He may be intelligent, but he's also volatile and toxic toward the people around him. The only good part of his character is that his backstory is fleshed out incredibly well, but that certainly doesn't make him a likable person.

4 Tohru Honda Is Too Perfect

Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket is an incredibly popular anime, which makes it surprising that so many anime fans dislike Tohru as a protagonist. The primary issue fans seem to have with her character is how perfect she is. She has cute flaws like dizziness and clumsiness, so there aren't really any negative aspects of her personality that make her feel more real.

Not to mention, she always knows the right thing to say in tough situations. Tohru is liked by everyone she meets, especially the members of the Sohma family. If Tohru's character was a little more realistic, it's likely that fewer anime fans would have an issue with her character.

3 Rito Yuuki Is Unbelievably Clumsy

To Love Ru

Yuuki from To Love Ru

Fans have gotten tired of the pervert gag, which is why most anime fans hate characters like Mineta from My Hero Academia and Meliodas from The Seven Deadly Sins. Yuuki from To Love Ru is just as bad as these characters and even worse in some cases.

Rito's main gag is that he's an incredibly clumsy person who constantly gropes girls' private parts by accident. If this wasn't enough to make fans instantly hate him, he also makes tons of mistakes that could be easily solved by anyone else. It's obvious his character only exists to cash in on the harem genre, which is why this series is completely unwatchable for a lot of fans.

2 Lelouch Lamperouge Is Arrogant

Code Geass

Lelouch Becomes Zero In Code Geass

Lelouch from Code Geass may be popular with his classmates, but a lot of anime fans find him hard to like. He is incredibly arrogant and uses people for his own gain. Every cruel thing he does as Zero is to help himself and his own cause, despite the fact that he claims to be doing it for his sister.

Lelouch also has a tendency to abandon people during battles, which is an incredibly unlikeable trait. He may have saved the world from tyranny in his own way, but that doesn't stop fans from hating him.

1 Makoto Itou Is A Liar

School Days

Makoto Itou from School Days.

Makoto from School Days may be a character who fans are supposed to hate, but that doesn't stop fans from openly venting about what a terrible person he is. He is a liar and a cheater who sleeps with any girl he can get his hands on.

Makoto only likes the girls at his school for their bodies, and he doesn't even seem to think of them as people worthy of love and respect. The fact that he genuinely doesn't care about any of the girls he's hurt is a serious indicator that there is something fundamentally wrong with him.
