Built by immortal scientists known as the Guardians of the Universe, Green Lantern Ring is said to be the most powerful weapon in the universe. Through these weapons, a tiny handful of the bravest beings in existence stand against the chaos of existence and try to keep some manner of peace for everyone.

But what about other universes? The DC multiverse features dozens of universes all operating on different vibrational frequencies, often each having their own Green Lanterns. How do they stack up against one another? To answer that question we’ve taken all of them and cut it down to ten of the strongest Green Lanterns from alternate universes and ranked them.

10 DUCK DODGERS

“In brightest day or blackest night, watermelon, canteloupe, yadda yadda, a superstitious and cowardly lot...with liberty and justice for all!” It’s...not the most inspiring version of the legendary Green Lantern oath, but it’s about the best one can expect when the dashing space captain Duck Dodgers only winds up with the ring thanks to a mix-up at the cleaners.

Still, Daffy Duck gets to be the “Green Loontern” for an episode, and he’s...surprisingly not all that bad. He helps the Green Lantern Corps foil one of Sinestro’s schemes before handing the ring and costume back to Hal Jordan. Still, while he was able to keep the store from burning down, he doesn’t exactly deserve to rank highly on this list.

9 HAL JORDAN (EARTH ONE)

Rather than a fighter pilot, this version of Hal Jordan is an astronaut miner who happens to run into a Manhunter and the deceased body of former Green Lantern Abin Sur.

After some shenanigans, Hal winds up wearing the ring and narrowly defeating the not-so-deceased Manhunter. Alongside fellow Green Lantern Kilowog, he learns to control the powers of the ring and even helps end the threat of the Manhunters to the universe alongside the other members of the Corps. But while Hal has some great success in this world, the character’s far too inexperienced with his ring to be much of a threat to anyone else on this list.

8 TANGENT GREEN LANTERN (EARTH 9)

The Tangent Universe is meant to be a world where heroes developed the same names with almost entirely different powers. That’s exactly what happened with their Green Lantern, a character that’s almost reminiscent of Alan Scott with her mystical Lantern, but not quite.

A young woman carrying a Chinese Lantern, this version of the character is less about creating neat constructs and more about being in touch with the other side of life. She can resurrect the dead, turn intangible, and go between dimensions with her powers. That said, while this makes her a useful ally in specific mystical situations, it doesn’t make her a powerhouse.

7 KAI-RO (EARTH 12)

Kai-Ro was a member of the Justice League of the future, during the Batman Beyond timeline. The character is a young boy who was raised in a Buddhist temple, and while Green Lanterns are often known for their courage, Kai-Ro is best known for keeping his temper regardless of the circumstances.

The character proves to be a powerful asset to the Justice League of the 2040s and 2050s, but at the same time since he’s more of a background character he never gets to show off much of his abilities. He’s also less likely to be tested as much as many of the others on this list because most of his adventures are team-based, and lacks the same experience as the heavy hitters.

6 ALAN SCOTT (EARTH 2)

Green Lantern Alan Scott

During the New 52, DC introduced another version of Earth-2, perhaps their most well-known alternate Earth. On that world, the identity of Green Lantern goes to Alan Scott, a media mogul who survived a train crash thanks to the planet choosing to make him the Avatar of the Green.

With these powers, instead of looking something like Swamp Thing he resembles his old self, and stands as the guardian of the planet against the powers of Solomon Grundy, the chosen avatar of death and decay. While he doesn’t do terribly well against Grundy, he’s still able to guide his people to a copied Earth after theirs gets destroyed in a battle with Darkseid, and it’s his power that keeps the world a habitable place, which places him pretty far up the charts in power.

5 MAGIC LANTERN (EARTH 47)

Magic Lantern’s what happens when you’ve been writing comics so long you can reference your own obscure work from twenty years ago. Initially Magic Lantern was introduced as a member of the Love Syndicate by Grant Morrison and Chaz Truog during his “Animal Man” run.

When he got the chance to map out the multiverse, Grant made the character and his team a part of Earth-47, the grooviest planet in the Orrery of Worlds. We haven’t seen him do a lot with his powers, but during his recent appearance in “The Green Lantern” he was able to negotiate an alien race from attacking the Earth, so he shouldn’t be underestimated.

4 LEN LEWIS (EARTH 6)

The “Just Imagine” version of the DC Universe happened after the company allowed Stan Lee to use the same names as the existing characters but to do whatever he wanted with them.

In the case of Green Lantern, he took the “Green” quite literally, and came up with Len Lewis, a young man endowed with powers by the world tree of Yggdrasil. Len’s powers are no joke, as he displays control over both the earth and the air, with presumably all of the elements of the planet available to him. He also has super strength and a measure of invulnerability, putting him closer to the camp of Superman than most of his peers on this list.

3 DAWNBREAKER (EARTH -32)

dawnbreaker-header

The Green Lantern of Earth -32, Bruce Wayne was granted the Green Lantern ring shortly after his parents were killed. With this power, he wanted nothing more than to kill his parents’ murderer, and when the ring didn’t allow that, he overrode it’s power with nothing but his own willpower and did so anyway. And that’s basically the story of this version of Green Lantern.

Bruce’s own will power corrupts the ring in such a fashion that he’s able to do whatever he wants. He kills off his usual rogues' gallery, wipes out the G.C.P.D. because they complained about it, and eventually even kills off the entire Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians when they try to stop him. It reads like the worst sort of fanfiction, but there’s no questioning Dawnbreaker’s abilities.

2 BAT-LANTERN (EARTH-32)

In Darkest Knight

During the Elseworlds comic “Batman: In Darkest Knight”, we get to see what Bruce would have been like if he had been chosen instead of Hal Jordan. After a terrible first attempt at fighting crime, Bruce is given the Power Ring of Abin Sur and becomes a version of Batman with the Green Lantern ring.

With this power, Bruce is forced to both police Gotham and Sector 2814, battling against his mortal enemy Sinestro. It’s safe to say that if you take the powers of Green Lantern and give them to someone with Bruce’s intelligence and expertise in combat, he’s easily one of the most dangerous Green Lanterns of all time.

1 ALAN SCOTT (EARTH 22)

kingdom come green lantern

The Kingdom Come version of the Justice League takes several of the existing heroes from the planet’s past and boosts their abilities up to absurd levels. Flash becomes so fast he’s constantly patrolling his city for the slightest problem. Superman’s so strong he’s immune to Kryptonite. And Alan Scott, the Green Lantern of this era? He’s basically merged with his lantern and taken all of its arcane energies into himself. The result? An armor clad version of the aging hero who builds an entire space station known as New Oa, just to watch over Earth and protect it from aliens.

Despite every construct being a function of will, he managed to keep this up for ten years. This version of Green Lantern is closer to Parallax or Ion than the others, making him the most powerful of them all.
