Anime is full of bubbly characters who have imaginations that are just as big as their personalities. Even though most anime take place in fantastical worlds, these characters manage to dream up scenarios that are weird even in the magical worlds they live in.

In some cases, a wild imagination is a sign that the character lacks common sense or intelligence. In other cases, a character is just too smart for their own good. Age can be a common factor in a character's imagination, but even some anime adults have managed to hang on to their childlike wonder.

10 Orihime Has The Strangest Imagination (Bleach)

Orihime from Bleach looking surprised.

Orihime is a very different girl at the beginning of Bleach. She often dreams up wild scenarios, which causes her friends to question her concepts of common sense.

When creating a painting of her future self, Orihime imagines herself as a giant robot and is surprised when her friends tell her she'll get in trouble for such an outlandish painting. Even when she matures into a much more sensible person, she still hangs on to her imagination, which leads her to think up a romantic moment between herself and Ichigo.

9 Tsumugi Loves Adventure (Sweetness & Lightning)

Tsumugi Inuzuka smiling upward while resting her arms on a table - Sweetness and Lightning.

Tsumugi is a young girl in Sweetness & Lightning, so it makes sense that she would have a wild imagination. Like many kids her age, she likes to pass the time by playing pretend even when it's something she shouldn't be doing.

When her father falls ill with a bad cold, Tsumugi ventures out to get him medicine. During her trip, she thinks up several wild scenarios that involve her walking along a plank to avoid sharks in the ocean. Her father gets incredibly angry with her when he finds out she left, which unfortunately ruins her fantastical trip.

8 Aang Is A Stress Sleeper (Avatar The Last Airbender)

aang anxious

Aang from Avatar the Last Airbender is the type of kid who loves to pretend and have fun, but when stress gets to him, his imagination really comes out. With the fate of the world on his shoulders, it makes sense for the pressure to get to him in strange ways.

Right before the Fire Nation invasion, insomnia makes Aang paranoid but also causes him to have some ridiculous dreams. Dreaming about a math test makes more sense for a kid in school and not the Avatar going through war. Aang even hallucinates Appa and Momo talking, which is one of the funniest moments in the series.

7 Naruto Dreams Big (Naruto)

Young Naruto from Boruto.

Naruto is a loud and obnoxious kid, which tends to get negative attention from others. His dream to be the Hokage seems like an outlandish fairy tale to the people around him, but Naruto is one of the few people capable of putting his dreams into reality.

It also helps that Naruto's wild imagination allows him to pull off jutsu that most people never would have thought of. The sexy jutsu, for example, is the type of technique that only Naruto could think up, and it's a surprisingly effective attack.

6 Hinata Expresses Himself With Sound (Haikyuu!)

Hinata at training camp

Hinata's love for volleyball is extreme in Haikyuu! and he's not afraid to let everybody hear about it. However, he has a tendency to lack the proper vocabulary to describe what he's thinking, which often leads to him using random sounds to describe what's going on in his head.

Even though Hinata's obnoxious imagination can be annoying, it's also helped him make some incredible strides in volleyball. It's likely he and his team wouldn't have made it so far if he didn't have the ability to think outside the box when the pressure is high.

5 Usopp Pretends To Be The Best (One Piece)

Usopp in One Piece.

Usopp is known as the liar of the crew in One Piece and with that comes a huge imagination. He comes up with the disguise Sniper King relatively quickly, and it's pretty easy for him to stay in character, even though most of the crew are aware it's him.

Usopp's ability to lie effectively is also why he's able to defeat Perona. His unconscious urge to fabricate grand stories of strength and adventure can be annoying for some, but to most fans, his wild imagination makes the series more fun.

4 Yuki Avoids Reality (School-Live!)

Yuki looking oblivious in front of broken windows

Yuki from School-Live! has a huge imagination, but unlike most characters, it's born out of necessity instead of a need for fun. The events leading up to the zombie apocalypse, as well as the death of her teacher Sakura, are so traumatic that she's created a fantasy in order to escape the reality of her situation.

As far as Yuki's concerned, her favorite teacher is still alive, and her friends are just enjoying their high school days. Eventually, she's able to come to terms with everything and cope with her loss, but the fact that she can ignore an apocalypse that's happening around her shows how active her imagination can be.

3 Renge Wants Romance (Ouran High School Host Club)

Renge Hoshokuji

Renge's active imagination spells trouble for the members of the Ouran High School Host Club and that's mainly because her imagination revolves around romance. When she first meets the members of the host club, she's convinced that Kyoya is her fiancé.

Renge even attempts to remake the members of the host club by giving them new personalities. Once Haruhi sets her straight, Renge's controlling tendencies calm down, but every once in a while she'll pop back up to share her romantic fantasies with everyone.

2 Anya Loves Playing Spies (Spy X Family)

Anya Spy x Family

Anya may read minds in Spy x Family, but that doesn't stop her from jumping to the wrong conclusions on several occasions. During her first days with her new father Loid, his thoughts of fighting while holding her hand lead her to believe that enemies will attack at any moment.

Anya even spends an entire night with her fake-ish family playing spies. Her imagination doesn't seem to be any more active than the average child her age, but her love for spies has definitely heightened her experience with imagination and play.

1 Ed Is An Oddball Genius (Cowboy Bebop)

Cowboy Bebop Ed in Episode 22, "Talk Like a Child."

Ed from Cowboy Bebop is an oddball and her intelligence has made her even odder. She is a child prodigy from Earth and an expert hacker who tends to get in trouble with her hacking skills. She even hacks into the Bebop, which is how she ends up joining the crew.

Ed plays an integral role in the crew's missions, but her messy, eccentric personality makes her difficult to understand, especially when she sings and talks to herself. The only one who seems to understand the way her brain works is Ein, but since he's a genius too, it makes sense that they would get each other.
