Thor is one of the cornerstone characters of Marvel Comics. He is one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe, one of its oldest heroes, and a founding member of the Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He has been a regular member of the team and played a central part in many of the most significant stories that Marvel has told.

Thor has had some very strange permutations produced by Marvel over the years. From cross-dimensional stories to the alternate Marvel history presented by the What If? stories, Marvel likes playing with its own history. Thor hasn't been immune from these redesigns and the God of Thunder's alternate interpretations get especially strange.

10 Harold Wilson, The Man Who Just Might Be Thor

Harald Wilson Thor

Harald Wilson is a man with schizophrenia in an alternate future in the year 2026 called Earth-3459. Thor has gone missing in this future, and a young boy named DJ stumbles upon a mystery that may very well lead to the return of Thor. In this future, Mjolnir was found on a moving train.

Harold Wilson may very well be Thor, but this mystery was never resolved. It's not revealed if Harald Wilson can pick up Mjolnir, and, given how old this story is, the world may never know.

9 Adam Aziz, The Accidental Everyman-Thor Who Lifted Mjolnir

Adam Aziz Thor Mjolnir

Adam Aziz just an average guy who lives in Broxton, Oklahoma (the once-home of Asgard after Thor initially revived after the Final Ragnarok.) Mjolnir landed in Broxton soon after Thor became the King of Asgard, and Adam Aziz was able to lift it, briefly becoming Thor.

Something has gone wrong with the enchantment on Mjolnir, and anyone can lift it...not just the worthy. This led to Adam lifting the hammer and gaining the powers of Thor. Thankfully, Adam was more than willing to give the hammer back to Thor when he arrived in Broxton to regain Mjolnir.

8 Beta Ray Bill, The Horse-Faced Thor Who Is Also One Of Marvel's Best Heroes

Beta Ray Bill feature

Beta Ray Bill is a Marvel classic. He was created by the great Walt Simonson, whose run on Thor is legendary. Beta Ray Bill is a Korbinite, a race who largely looks like humans aside from a lack of a nose and yellowy-orange skin. However, he was cybernetically enhanced by his people to help protect the Korbinites as they fled the Burning Galaxy. This transformation made Bill look like a horse.

Bill found Mjolnir during his peoples' exodus, transforming him and giving him the power of Thor. Bill saw this as a weapon that could protect his people, but Thor wanted his hammer back. Odin set up a contest between Thor and Bill for the fate of Mjolnir which Bill won. However, Odin predicted this and gave Mjolnir back to Thor. For Bill, Odin created the mystic hammer Stormbreaker, which gave Beta Ray Bill the powers of Thor. Bill and Thor became very close friends, and Beta Ray Bill has since performed heroic deeds across the universe.

7 Thor Kid, Who Has No Real Relation To The Actual Thor

Thor Kid charging into battle

Thor Kid is part of a Chicago-based street gang that based their aesthetic after the various superheroes of Earth. Thor Kid wore a helmet and wielded twin hammer tools. He doesn't actually have any relation to Thor; he's just a fanboy.

The story of Thor Kid is actually quite tragic. He operated in Chicago while Luke Cage was working in the city. However, Thor Kid was killed by the Bogeyman, an interdimensional villain inhabiting a city councilman by the name of Randolph Creed at the time.

6 The Short-Lived Lizard Thor From Doctor Doom's Battleworld

5 That Time J. Jonah Jameson Picked Up Mjolnir And Became Himself But With Superpowers

J Jonah Jameson during the Spider-Island event

In another universe titled "What's Wrong...Plenty" from the Spider-Man Magazine, J. Jonah Jameson, editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle and constant critic of Spider-Man, was able to lift Mjolnir.

This didn't transform JJJ in any noticeable manner. He had the powers of Thor but looked no different. However, he did help fight Doc-Ock and Magneto when they attacked the Daily Bugle.

4 That Time That Howard The Duck Picked Up Mjolnir, The Duck Of Thunder

cover detail from Howard the Duck #16

There is a team made up of Howard the Ducks somewhere out there in the Multiverse. This team is called the Legion of Howards, who fought evil wherever needed. One Howard, called Howard Duckson, was able to lift Mjolnir and gained the powers of Thor.

When the Prime Howard arrived in this reality, the Legion of Howards asked for Prime Howard's help. Howard Duckson offered Prime Howard Mjolnir but was killed by Alphonse, who has traveled the Multiverse to eat the liver of every Howard the Duck.

3 Volstagg The War Thor, The Hybrid Of Ultimates Thor And Volstagg

Volstagg as the War Thor bringing down his hammer

At one point, the Thor of Earth-1610 (the Ultimate Earth) lost his hammer, which landed in Earth-616 (the mainstream Marvel Universe). Thor Odinson, then unable to lift Mjolnir, almost made this hammer his own but ultimately decided to leave it.

Later, Volstagg lifted this hammer and became the War Thor. This led Volstagg on a rampage, fighting the Fire Demons of Muspelheim and the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. He later went on to fight the Mangog, but the beast almost killed Volstagg. This was the last time that Volstagg held the mantle of War Thor.

2 Maria Hill, The Thor Who Lived In The Judge Dredd World

Maria Hill as Thor

Back on Battleworld, there was a city called Mondo City. This realm is heavily inspired by Mega City-One, the home of Judge Dredd. Maria Hill was the Thor of this realm, and she wore a Punisher skull on her armor.

Maria Hill, for the uninitiated, is a high-ranking member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and has even been the Director once or twice. Maria Hill is the less odd detail of this than her existence in a Judge Dredd-esque reality. One of the most dangerous "Bosses" (what they call Judges in this reality) is Boss Cage, a version of Luke Cage made into one of the brutal Bosses.

1 Throg, The God Of Thunder Amphibian With The All The Powers Of Thor But Small

Throg screaming in front of lightning

The most famous bizarre Thor is Throg, the Frog of Thunder. He is inspired by the Norse mythology story of Loki turning Thor into a frog. Throg has been part of the Pet Avengers and most recently narrowly survived a fight against a rampaging Donald Blake.

Throg was once Simon Walterson (a name inspired by Thor writer and artist Walt Simonson) until he was turned into a frog by a witch. In this reality, Thor was also turned into a frog, but he lost Mjolnir in a fight against vicious rats. Throg proved worthy to lift the miniaturized Mjolnir and became Throg, the Frog of Thunder.
