There are many ways a group of friends can be awkward. A pair of individuals might have differing opinions, but became friends in spite of it. Some friends just don't really get along, even if they really do care for each other deep down. There are also times when two friends can even start off as rivals, constantly trying to one-up each other.

10 Sailor Moon: Usagi & Rei Certainly Fight A Lot

Usagi turns her back on Rei to Monster

In the '90s Sailor Moon anime, Usagi and Rei usually do not get along too well, with Rei often insulting or scolding Usagi before it eventually escalates into a screaming match or even a physical fight between the two. Despite that, even Usagi isn't above abandoning Rei to the occasional monster-of-the-week.

That said, they do care about each other and have even given up their lives to protect one another. Interestingly, it's implied that Usagi is actually closer to Rei than the others, having even once trusted the Silver Crystal to her when she feared she wasn't strong enough to keep it from the villains. In general, the '90s anime just loved to have Usagi get along poorly with those she cares about, whether it's her love interest Mamoru, who also bullies her at first, or her time-traveling daughter, Chibiusa.

9 Yu Yu Hakusho: Yusuke & Kuwabara Are Rivals Turned Best Friends

Kuwara Threatening His Friend Yusuke

They eventually join forces once Yusuke returns to life and becomes an agent of the Spirit World. Kwabara will probably only admit that Yusuke is his best friend after cursing him out.

Of course, this seems to be the norm for Yusuke's friendships. He joined forces with Hiei despite starting out as a villain who targeted Keiko. Ironically, despite starting out as a bully, Kuwabara can be said to be the nicest member of Team Urameshi.

Interestingly, Mr. Satan turns out to be a good influence on Buu as he is the one who convinces him to stop killing people. One of the video games, Dragon Ball Fusions, even shows a fusion between the two.
