How is it already the halfway point of the Winter 2020 season? While it may not seem possible, it is true, and the rest of the year will fly by before we know it. This Winter season has already provided a treasure trove of supernatural anime—yokai shows like In/Spectre and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, and even a very weird and certifiably insane show like Pet. The good news is that after this season is done, there are plenty of supernatural anime to look forward to in 2020.

Before the list begins; however, Zombieland Saga: Revenge and the second season of Made in Abyss may or may not appear in 2020, but there is a slight chance that they will. It would be foolish to not mention them just in case they do. Also do not forget Dorohedoro and Drifting Dragons, which are currently in US Netflix prison—they'll be released one of these days.

10 Gleipnir

Let's start with the strangest one first. Gleipnir is a manga adaptation and is set to premiere in Spring 2020. The anime surrounds Kagaya Shuuichi who discovers he possesses an odd power while saving a classmate from a fire—he can turn into a dog who wields a gigantic gun and has a zipper running down it's back...Anime is a trip.

Shuuichi saves his classmate, which she repays by blackmailing him—threatening to reveal his secret unless he helps her solve/take revenge for her family's murder. Much like No Gun's Life last season, this synopsis likely either put you 100% in or 100% out on this anime. And really, what's the harm in taking the plunge?

9 Made In Abyss: Dawn Of The Deep Soul

While the second season of Made in Abyss might not appear this year, its movie most certainly will! The long-awaited continuation of Riko's and Reg's journey into the abyss will be coming to US theaters sometime in 2020!

It has been nearly two and a half years since the "Anime of the Year" winner last aired. This is technically the third movie in the series, but the first to not be a compilation of the series. Thankfully, and to no one's surprise, the movie has been met with tremendous reviews since its January 17 release in Japan. It's definitely one of the theatrical anime events of the year!

8 Sol Levante

Outrageously, there is very little known about this upcoming Netflix title, especially considering it should have premiered in Late 2019 and has blown past that deadline with zero updates. But what is known is known about the series is reason enough to stay invested—Sol Levante will be the first hand-drawn anime with 4K quality.

Netflix was also so kind as to release this captivating behind the scenes video back in September 2019, showing how much hard work is going into this series' creation. So, while Netflix prison is a confounding barrier for the consumption of anime, it's also undeniable how much Netflix believes in anime and their heavy investment in the medium.

7 The Promised Neverland Season 2

Has anyone been able to catch their breath since season one ended? One of the best psychological thrillers in ages and "Anime of the Year" contender, The Promised Neverland, is making its season two debut in October 2020.

This season will undoubtedly give us our first glimpse of the world outside of the orphanage's walls. Escaping Mama and the orphanage might have been the easy part for Emma, Ray, and the rest of the children. They're now in an unknown environment and surrounded by creatures who want nothing more than to harvest them for meat. And don't forget, Phil and the rest of the toddlers are still with Mama at the orphanage! October cannot come fast enough!

6 Pacific Rim

It is perfectly fitting that Pacific Rim is getting an anime. Mecha? Check! Kaiju? Check! Crazy power-ups and weapons? Check and check!

Take a moment and thank Netflix for adapting this movie property into an anime series. Given how paltry the mecha genre has been in anime lately, a property like Pacific Rim could boost it back into the limelight. There is no confirmed season or date for the anime, but by all accounts, there should be two seasons and it should premiere sometime in 2020. Hopefully, it won't be stuck in Netflix prison when the time comes.

5 Uzumaki

Complain about the Junji Ito Collection anime as much as you want to, but the series still succeeded in bringing many jarring, disturbing, and unsettling stories to screen (If you made it through "Greased" unscathed, you are a liar).

Uzumaki is another terrifying installment from Junji Ito. The manga the anime will be based on is an unrelenting, 650-page horror manga based on spirals. As ridiculous as that sounds, spirals will never be the same again. Based on the trailer, it appears the series will be black & white. It will also only be four episodes long, hopefully indicating more time and care can be put into the tale. There is no definitive date set for the series, but it will air exclusively on Adult Swim/Toonami.

4 BNA: Brand New Animal

This upcoming Netflix anime is certainly a bit of a departure from Studio Trigger's other works. BNA follows Michiru Kagemori and the mysterious new world emerging before her in the 21st century.

An underground race of beast people has emerged from the shadows to try and live safely in Anima City. One day, Michiru turns from a human being into a Tanuki person and fearing for her safety, heads to Anima City. Once there, she meets Shiro Okami, a wolf person with a grudge against humans, and the quest to discover the reason behind her sudden change begins! For a Studio Trigger anime, this doesn't appear as bombastic as their previous series.

3 Fruits Basket Season 2

Our favorite Zodiac family is returning in Spring 2020! After the extremely emotional conclusion to Fruits Basket last season, it's quite a relief to be getting a second season and returning to the warmth of the Souma house so soon! This second season will also move us past the ending point of the much-maligned 2001 series.

It will be interesting to see how this season progresses Tohru's relationships with both Kyo and Yuki, especially after Kyo's huge reveal at the end of last season. And there's always the looming threat of Akito Souma. Season two will be keeping everyone on the edge of their seat for sure.

2 Fire Force Season 2

Fire Force was an unexpected gem from Summer 2019. Hopefully Shinra and the rest of the Special Fire Force Company 8 squad will continue impressing audiences when season two premieres later in 2020!

Really, Fire Force could be recommended solely on its hypnotizing animation and fight scene choreography, but the story and characters really put this show over the top. Alternatively, if you happen to be a fan of Atsushi Ōkubo's other works (Soul Eater or B.Ishi), this is an easy recommendation. Season two will definitely continue peeling back the layers of mystery surrounding Shinra's "Devil Footprints" and his brother Sho.

1 Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0

This is the fourth and final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion theatrical series. For the unaware, this is a retelling of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series from the man himself, Hideaki Anno. This movie is also over seven years removed from the third film and has been delayed since 2013.

For Anno, telling and ending this story exactly the way he wants has been a tumultuous experience, and this fourth film promises to have a completely new conclusion. And truthfully, it's a beautiful thing that 24 years later, the world will finally get to see the ending Anno wanted Evangelion to have. The movie will be released on June 27, 2020, in Japan. No other release dates have been set.
