September is always seen as the time when television shows take center stage and premiere new seasons and there is a lot on the docket for the upcoming month. Between network television series and streaming shows, there is something for everybody across a wide selection of genres including epics, thrillers and comedies.

Just because television tends to be a focus of the month, does not mean that there are not any big anticipated movies being released in September. September is usually when a few awards-season movies release to get them in front of viewers, and a number of them will release on streaming services for those to enjoy at home.

10 "The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power" Is Amazon's Most Highly Anticipated Project (September 2nd)

Amazon will drop the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power right at the beginning of the month. Set during the Second Age of Middle-Earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings film series, an ensemble cast confronts the return of evil in Middle-Earth.

Amazon has a lot riding on the show, as it is the most expensive season of television ever made at the hefty price tag of over $450 million. Amazon has also committed to five seasons for the show as of writing. Early reactions have been positive so far, and the first two episodes will also recieve a limited theatrical run.

9 "Rick And Morty" Returns For More Mayhem (September 4th)

The wildly-successful Rick and Morty returns for its sixth season on Adult Swim. As the series was renewed for an unprecedented 70 episodes back in 2018, there is still plenty more of Rick and Morty on the way. The show has been the highest performing comedy on US cable in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Fans will not have to wait too long, as Adult Swim announced a special episode to release before the premiere. The episode is an interactive one, titled "Wormageddon", as fans are tasked with going on an international treasure hunt to defeat an alien worm after the explosion of the Citadel in the season 5 finale. The unique episode is perfectly on brand for the series and gets fans to join in on the fun.

8 "Pinocchio" Continues The Live-Action Trend For Disney (September 8th)

Disney continues its trend of adapting its animated classics to live-action with Pinocchio. Starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the classic story follows a wooden puppet who is brought to live and strives to be a real boy. The film will release exclusively on Disney+ on Disney+ Day.

Disney's live-action adaptations tend to be successful, and this one has some impressive talent behind it. It is by Robert Zemeckis, reuniting him with Hanks after their successful collaborations of Forrest Gump, Cast Away and The Polar Express.

7 "Cobra Kai" Gets An Earlier Premiere Than Usual (September 9th)

Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its fifth season. The popular sequel series to the Karate Kid movies, it follows Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso renewing their rivalry over thirty years after their first fight. The series was renewed for a fifth season before season four even premiered.

Cobra Kai is one of Netflix's best performers, and was even nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for its third season in 2021. Season 5 looks to pick up right after season 4's finale, where Daniel seeks to defeat Cobra Kai for good and Johnny heads to Mexico looking for Miguel. Fans are anticipating which original characters from the Karate Kid films will appear in this season outside of Johnny and Daniel.

6 "The Handmaid’s Tale" Looks To Bounce Back (September 14th)

Hulu's hit The Handmaid's Tale returns, and hopes to rebound from its lowest-rated season yet. The series continues the story of June Osborne, as she deals with the fallout from last season's killing of Commander Fred Waterford and sending her after Fred's widow Serena.

Two episodes will release on September 14th before airing one a week for the ten-episode season. Viewers have recently commented on how the themes of the show; set in the aftermath of a Second Civil War in the United States, are eerily mirroring actual events in the United States right now such as Roe v. Wade being overturned by the Supreme Court.

5 "Do Revenge" Continues Maya Hawke's Netflix Projects (September 16th)

A new Netflix original Do Revenge will hit the streamer this month. Starring Camilla Mendes and Maya Hawke, they play high school students who are bullied for different reasons, and they agree to go after their bullies for revenge. The film is directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

The film is described as a dark comedy and "Hitchcock-ian", and was inspired by Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. Hawke has been a breakout star of Stranger Things for her performance as Robin Buckley, and this film shows she is continuing her working relationship with Netflix. The director confirmed that the production moved filming locations around to fit Hawke's Stranger Things filming schedule.

4 "Andor" Will Be The Latest Star Wars Series On Disney+ (September 21st)

Andor will be Disney+'s latest foray into Star Wars. Diego Luna reprises his role of Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in this prequel series. Five years before Rogue One, Andor goes on a journey that eventually turns him into a Rebel hero against the Empire. The series will have 24 episodes, 12 episodes a season, and the premiere will include the first three.

Andor is a highly anticipated show amongst Star Wars fans. Cassian was one of the most important and fan-favorite characters in Rogue One, and it will be interesting to see how he was forged into the hero Jyn Erso allied with to steal the Death Star plans. Given Star Wars' track record on Disney+, expect a great and thrilling story to follow.

3 "Don’t Worry Darling" Is Olivia Wilde's Anticipated Directorial Follow-Up (September 23rd)

Don't Worry Darling is an interesting film to keep an eye on. Starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, they play a couple who lives in a near-perfect utopian community in the 1950s and soon not all is as it seems. Directed by Olivia Wilde, her second directorial effort after Booksmart, who also has a supporting role in the film along with Chris Pine.

The film has received press for reasons outside just being an Oscar contender. Wilde and Styles began a relationship on the film, leading to intense media scrutiny. Wilde also confirmed in an interview that Styles replaced Shia LeBeouf in order to keep Pugh safe as Wilde felt this was her responsibility as director.

2 "Blonde" Gives An Inner Look At Marilyn Monroe (September 28th)

Netflix will finally debut Blonde, a biopic surrounding Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe. Ana de Armas will play Monroe, and the movie is described as a fictionalized take on Monroe's life in Hollywood and her struggles off-screen including her drug addiction. The film is the first NC-17 rated project to be a Netflix original.

Armas has been getting early praise for her performance as Monroe and is expected to be in the Oscars conversation. The film has spent the past few months weathering its NC-17 rating controversy, something that will only draw more viewers to the film on Netflix.

1 "Hocus Pocus 2" Finally Comes To Fruition After 29 Years (September 30th)

At long last, 29 years later, Hocus Pocus is finally getting a sequel. Hocus Pocus 2 finds the Sanderson sisters back in action, and a group of high school students must figure out how to stop them from taking over the world. It will be released exclusively on Disney+.

Fans of the original film had been asking for a sequel for years and Bette Milder, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker all expressed interest in returning. The teaser trailer garnered 43.6 million views in its first 24 hours and is expected to be a strong performer for Disney+ with Halloween season coming up.
