WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mosquito Coast Season 1, Episode 6, "Calaca," which aired Friday on Apple TV+.

Apple TV's adaptation of The Mosquito Coast is getting more intense as Allie (Justin Theroux) tries to get to Calaca in Mexico and protect his family from the NSA. Sadly, he's lost their guide in Chuy, and bit by bit, his family also realizes they may be in over their heads on the lam. Unfortunately, Allie's latest decision is a dangerous gamble. It may have cost him too much with his wife, Margot (Melissa George), who's no longer up for this dangerous lifestyle.

Season 1, Episode 6, picks up with the person Allie thinks is Calaca kidnapping the couple and wanting intel. The mysterious man doesn't answer any of Allie's questions, detaining and torturing the genius instead. He believes Allie is hiding info regarding the real Calaca and the terrorist hub known as Casa Roja. However, Allie doesn't sell out.

The interrogation takes a dark turn when the man has his goon fire a gun at Margot, strapped down to a chair in another room, making it seem like he's killed her. Even after that, a stunned Allie doesn't leak intel on his past connections regarding what or who Calaca's people are. This convinces the man Allie's genuine, and he reveals himself as the next iteration of Calaca. He's an environmental lawyer who's now protecting the group as Allie's last link, a female who was Calaca back then, has died.

He's convinced Allie, a former environmental activist who worked on climate change and bird migration models the NSA wanted, can be trusted and lets him go. The problem is when Allie finds Margot alive and well, she slaps him because she's had enough of his games. She's pissed he didn't give up his old colleagues, opting to risk her life instead.

He slips up, admitting he protected them over her, but he tries to patch it up by saying he knew the group was testing him. Still, Margot's repulsed and clearly over it. She doesn't care if it was a ruse; Allie refusing to share details endangered her life and meant he'd be charged with taking care of their kids, continuing this crazy life.

While the test earns him the info he needs to get to the Casa Roja safe house in Guatemala, the price is a marriage that's now moved from on the rocks to broken. A disgusted Margot decides to stick with him a bit longer to follow his plan only because Lucrecia's cartel, her hitman Bill and rogue cops are looking for them. They already murdered the NSA agents, so Margot has no choice but to use Allie to keep her children safe, except now it's out of necessity, not love.
