Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner offered up a less-than-definitive answer to the question of when the first trailer for the upcoming movie will finally drop.

When a fan on Twitter asked about the trailer release date, Garner replied, "I think this Summer." The filming of the movie itself has already been completed.

Fan anticipation has been high ever since Midway Studios was acquired by Warner Bros. in 2009 and NetherRealm Studios was established the following year. After all, it's been 25 years since the first live-action feature-length adaptation of Mortal Kombat made it to the big screen, and the followup, 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was a notorious disappointment. Along with the revival of the main series since 2011's soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 9, these details all made a new Mortal Kombat film a natural idea, even in a Hollywood crowded with remakes, reboots and sequels.

There have already been some tantalizing hints of what's to come. Photos from the set have been released over the course of filming, along with an Instagram video from Nathan Jones that's fueled rumors he's been cast to play series big bad Shao Khan.

Produced by James Wan, featuring the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid and starring Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer Elissa Cadwell and Tadanobu Asano, Mortal Kombat arrives Jan. 15, 2021.
