Concept artist Jerad Marantz posted some never-before-seen concept art of Sub-Zero from an abandoned Mortal Kombat film.

Marantz posted the newly-designed Sub-Zero on Instagram. He captioned the image, "Here’s some concept art of Sub-Zero for a Mortal Kombat movie pitch. I did this for the insanely talented Kevin Tancharoen, who was set to direct this project. Kevin Tancharoen directed and produced Mortal Kombat Legacy and Mortal Kombat Rebirth, So he was the perfect guy for the job. I did the concept work through Tinsley Studio. Would’ve been a very cool project. I did a lot of exploration on this character."

In the concept art, Marantz updates the iconic character's traditional ice blue and black warrior outfit for a more streamlined, superhero-like costume. Sub-Zero is surrounded by officers as he breathes vapor through a motorcycle-style helmet, replacing his traditional icy blue mask and warrior helmet.

While Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat may not have gotten off the ground, the Simon McQuoid-directed 2021 reboot is set in January rather than its March 5 release date with James Wan as a producer and Greg Russo as the film's writer.

Helmed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is expected to arrive in theaters on January 15.
