The new Mortal Kombat is hitting the ground running, releasing the anticipated film's bloody opening scene recounting Scorpion's origins online days ahead of the movie's official debut.

Expanding from a previously released promo, the scene sees ninja warrior Hanzo Hasashi endure a devastating loss when a rival clan attacks his family in feudal Japan. As Hanzo wrecks vengeance on those responsible, he finds himself facing off against Sub-Zero.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero have one of the most vicious rivalries in the entire Mortal Kombat franchise, with a previously released scene teasing a showdown between Scorpion and Sub-Zero after both have assumed their full ninja forms. And with the memory of his lost family fresh in his mind centuries later, Scorpion and Sub-Zero's feud is about to grow to fiery new heights.

Director Simon McQuoid noted that he strove to be faithful to the video game source material, while lending a sense of authenticity to the proceedings. Producer Todd Garner echoed this sentiment, observing that this sense of fidelity meant that the action scenes shouldn't pull their punches and deliver on expectations of the franchise's signature bloody violence.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 23.
