The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot will feature some of the franchise's prominent characters, including Sub-Zero. Director Simon McQuoid recently discussed the cryogenic warrior's role in the film, as well as which version of Sub-Zero audiences will see in action.

McQuoid told IGN the original Sub-Zero, Bi-Han, will play a major role in 2021's Mortal Kombat. Bi-Han will be the main antagonist, as seen in the film's first trailer, featuring him savagely ripping off Jax's arms and engaging in combat with Scorpion.

In Mortal Kombat lore, Bi-Han was the original Sub-Zero who Scorpion sought vengeance against for the death of his family. During 1992's Mortal Kombat game, Scorpion burned Bi-Han to death. However, Bi-Han would later be resurrected as the shadow-manipulating assassin Noob Saibot. Bi-Han's brother Kuai Ling would later take up his mantle of Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat is the latest film adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Director Paul W.S. Anderson previously helmed a live-action adaptation in 1995 and John R. Leonetti directed its 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Warner Bros. is also reportedly developing an animated Mortal Kombat film, which focuses on a new generation of fighters.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 16.
