With both of the previous live-action Mortal Kombat films rated PG-13 to appeal to wider audiences, the cinematic adaptations had to tone down the video game franchise's signature violence and finishing moves to secure the more family-friendly rating. The upcoming reboot, fortunately, appears poised to appeal to fanbase by including live-action fatalities in all their infamous gory glory.As pre-production continues on the James Wan-produced cinematic reboot, screenwriter Greg Russo posted on Twitter that the film is indeed planned to receive an R-rating and include the bloody finishing moves, without specifying which fan-favorite finishers would be seen.RELATED: Mortal Kombat Movie Recruits The Raid Star to Play Sub-Zero

Ever since the inaugural video game installment in 1992, Mortal Kombat has thrilled players and shocked parents with its deliriously gory finishing moves that reward victors of fights by brutally killing their defeated opponents. The finisher has become something of a defining staple of the franchise appearing in every installment since.

With only Sub-Zero has been cast for the upcoming reboot so far, it remains to be seen which additional fighters and their finishing moves will be showcased in the film.

The Mortal Kombat reboot is being produced by James Wan through New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. The screenplay is written by Greg Russo and marks the feature directorial debut of Simon McQuoid. The film is scheduled to be released on March 5, 2021.
