The success of Godzilla vs. Kong has led to a thought experiment from Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon.Boon recently posted a poll on Twitter, asking "Do you think there are enough well known giant monsters (Godzilla, Kong, etc) to make a Monster Fighting Game?" At the time of writing, fans have had an overwhelmingly positive response -- with 77.1% voting "yes." Fans have also thrown out possible candidates for fighters, which also included the Jaegers from Pacific Rim and even artist BossLogic suggesting Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil: Village.RELATED: #ContinueTheMonsterVerse Trends on Twitter Following Godzilla vs Kong's Release

Kaiju have played a role in fighting games before. Godzilla himself served as the basis for a trio of fighting games in the early 2000s, beginning with Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee in 2002. The PlayStation 2 game War of the Monsters, released in 2003, also featured monsters inspired by kaiju and other creatures from 1950s-era science fiction films.

Godzilla vs. Kong has been a smashing success, gathering $48.5 million over the first five days of its domestic release. It has also earned a total of $18 million overseas in China and smashed the IMAX record -- selling $4.5 million in tickets during the first week of release. This led to fans calling for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. to continue making films in the MonsterVerse.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
