The ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted numerous film productions and, per new comments from producer Todd Garner, the new Mortal Kombat movie is no exception.

"Well, I thought by the casts' social media you would've figured out we're shooting a few more days," Garner said in a tweet. "We'd always planned for it & thought we'd do it in March. The pandemic had other plans. We won't have a release date for the movie until theaters re-open. Same for trailer."

Prior to the start of the pandemic, Garner had said that Mortal Kombat was aiming to release its trailer during summer 2020 while initial principal photography completed at the end of 2019.

The new Mortal Kombat film will serve as a reboot to Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997). The franchise also spawned two TV series: Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. In comparison to the previous live-action movies, this new Mortal Kombat will be rated-R and replicate the gruesome violence of the original games.

Produced by James Wan, featuring the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid and starring Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer Elissa Cadwell and Tadanobu Asano, Mortal Kombat is currently scheduled to be in theaters Jan. 15, 2021.
