Ed Boon -- the co-creator of popular fighting video game Mortal Kombat -- has promised fans that NetherRealm Studios has a “big surprise” arriving next year.

“The story of Mortal Kombat, we’re pretty much calling this one [Mortal Kombat 11] the end of the story, but we’re certainly not through with Mortal Kombat. You know, there are more characters that are gonna come and we have a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat.”

The latest iteration to the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, just received a new load of DLC content to celebrate Halloween. These include a Masquerade Skin Pack, available for $5.99, and a free Halloween themed in-game event that will run between October 25 and November 1. This event will feature varying Halloween themed items and modifiers. There will also be new Brutalities, consumables, player modules pieces and other in-game rewards for players to unlock and enjoy. Mortal Kombat 11 also saw the recent release of Terminator T-800 as a playable character.

At the time of writing, there is no further indication as to what the next stage of Mortal Kombat will look like, but with Boon promising that the story is coming to an end while simultaneously reaffirming that the company isn’t through with the property, fans can continue to expect different Mortal Kombat experiences in the future.
