Ed Boon, the legendary creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, has an idea of who Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson could play in a live-action adaptation of the fighting game.Responding to the recent news that Johnson will be working on bringing a popular video game franchise to the big screen in the near future, Boon believes that the Hollywood superstar's gigantic physique and muscles would be perfect for playing one of Mortal Kombat's most iconic villains. "He’d make a great Shao Kahn," tweeted Boon, without elaborating on his reasoning. Fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise shouldn't take the creator's tweet as confirmation that Johnson will appear in an upcoming movie but it is fun to imagine The Rock performing one of the franchise's ultra-violent fatalities.Related: Red Notice's Dwayne Johnson Gives His Custom Pickup Truck Away to a Fan

Johnson recently revealed that he's been in the process of making a film adaption of what he describes as a major video game. "I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years," said Johnson. While he specifically mentions Electronic Arts' popular Madden NFL series as a favorite franchise, it's unlikely that this is the game in question. "I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie," concluded Johnson.

While the actor never alluded to the franchise in question, the announcement was enough to send social media into a frenzy. Fans began speculating as to the nature of Johnson's mysterious video game movie role with many joking that he could appear in adaptations of Devil May Cry, Cooking Mama, Minecraft and Animal Crossing. Many poked fun at the idea that The Rock could reprise his role in a sequel to the 2005 live-action Doom film.

As for Mortal Kombat, the fighting game series is no stranger to Hollywood adaptions. Several films, both animated and live-action, have tried to capture the heart of the ultra-violent series. The most recent attempt was 2021's Mortal Kombat which was directed by Simon McQuoid and stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson. The film received mixed reviews with critics praising its visceral action while lamenting its poor script and wonky performances.
