The newly released Mortal Kombat trailer makes it clear the latest installment of the franchise will have everything fans want and more. Despite a top-down reinvention of some of the most fundamental elements, the footage nevertheless showcases that director Simon McQuoid's film intends to remain true to the core of the franchise.

Here are the biggest moments you won't want to miss.

Jax Receives a New Origin

Mortal Kombat trailer

In a perfect encapsulation of what the reboot seems to be going for, the trailer reveals Jax will receive a new origin -- and in the most awesome way possible. Although the cyborg-armed super-soldier is best known for his powerful punches and cocky attitude, incarnations vary in how he lost those limbs in the first place. The footage doesn't play coy, and instead shows Sub-Zero freezing off Jax's arms in macabre Mortal Kombat style.

The film's setup appears to involve a task force, including Jax, hunting down super-powered individuals. Sonya Blade leads the briefing, and from Jax's interaction with Sub-Zero it's clear the group may be out of its depth. Sub-Zero freezes the bullet fired from Jax's rifle before taking his arms. The hero reappears later with his signature cybernetics in place, although there's no glimpse yet on whether he gets his chance at revenge.

Kombatants Get a Brand

Mortal Kombat trailer

Many of the details surrounding the Mortal Kombat tournament tend to be murky, with the general story involving the entire realm needing to unite in order to fight for its survival in an interdimensional battle of good and evil. The movie appears to delve into that history head-on, tying it into a mythology part of every culture. To further hit home its importance, Kombatants are marked with a brand bearing the Mortal Kombat logo.

The brand is said to be emblazoned upon Kombatants at birth. Whereas previous stories had shifting measures for what qualifies someone to compete in the tournament, it appears the new movie is leaving that up to destiny where the fighters were chosen years ago.

Scorpion's Origin Is Retold

Mortal Kombat Trailer

Not everything the trailer promises is a recreation, however. When it comes to fan-favorite character Scorpion, the film sticks to the classics. With his story most recently told just last year in the animated Scorpion's Revenge, the franchise is again revisiting the undead ninja obsessed with winning his vengeance against Sub-Zero.

The trailer portrays Scorpion prior to his transformation, wielding his identifiable tethered kunai as a weapon rather than issuing them from his hands as in the games. Given what the trailer shows later, it's clear Scorpion will take on his more familiar yellow-masked form over the course of the story. If it's as gory as the trailer promises, fans won't be disappointed.

A Larger-Than-Ever Cast

Mortal Kombat trailer

Perhaps most curious is who the trailer builds up to be the heroes. Whereas the 1995 film focused on the trio of Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage much as most retellings do (including Scorpion's Revenge, most recently), the trailer instead promises a larger band of heroes representing Earth. While Kang and Blade appear to be allied with Raiden, as usual, Cage notably does not. Instead they are joined by Kung Lao, Jax, an original character named Cole Young, and the robotic-eyed Kano, who in all previous incarnations was a villain.

The villains expand their ranks accordingly, with all-too-brief appearances from the fanged Mileena, the scaly Reptile, the four-armed Goro, the smoky Noob Saibot, the hook-sworded Kabal and, of course, the big bad, Shang Tsung. Most of their appearances are blink-and-you-miss-it moments; there's no telling how many of these fights occur in the tournament itself or in Tsung's efforts to stop the heroes from interfering with his plans. Either way, seeing these characters clash in live-action will be absolutely epic.

Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion WILL Happen

Mortal Kombat trailer

The trailer saves one of its coolest moments for its big finale. Sub-Zero and Scorpion face off in a match-up that harks back to the earliest days of the franchise. While the two ninja were mesmerized into an alliance the 1995 film, it's clear the reboot returns to their roots as bitter rivals. In the course of their fight, Sub-Zero wounds Scorpion so badly he spurts blood, which is then frozen into a new weapon.

The moment perfectly epitomizes everything a Mortal Kombat film should have, tying in imaginative gore with adrenaline-pumping action all in the perfect moment of fan service. With Jax likely aiming for his own revenge its hard to say how he may have to get in line behind Scorpion, and with so many characters filling the film it's hard to say who will live and who will come out as champion when it's all said and done.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 16.
