Mortal Kombat II has suffered a significant source code leak.

As reported by Exputer, the source code appeared online on GitHub and is available to download. The leak contains every component of Mortal Kombat II, including canned assets, animations, sprites and movesets. YouTuber TehDrewsus explored the source code via a three-hour live stream, which didn't even cover half of the surfaced material. In the leak, some discovered never-before-seen content, including another fatality for Shao Khan and more animations for Johnny Cage.

Released in 1993, Mortal Kombat II is an arcade fighting game later ported to several home systems, including the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation and many more. The game serves as the second mainline installment in the action franchise after 1992's Mortal Kombat. The 1993 sequel added more Fatalities, finishers per character and more members to the roster. Characters like Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Noob Saibot and Shao Kahn debuted in Mortal Kombat II.

Besides video games, Mortal Kombat has also appeared on the big screen. Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater hopped on board to write the script for the sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat film adaptation. Several cast members from the sequel's predecessor plan to return, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade. Previously, McNamee shared her hopes of Josh Lawson returning as Kano. "I would be lying if I didn't say I'd miss having Josh Lawson back [as] Kano," she said. "The great thing about Mortal Kombat is that they can kill people whenever they want, and they can also bring them back whenever they want."

Mortal Kombat 2's Leak Isn't the Only One

Source code leaks have frequently plagued video game companies. In February 2021, someone sold the source code for developer CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 (including an unreleased version) and Gwent: The Witcher Card Game at an auction on the dark web for $7 million. In addition to the games' data, the leaker compromised the company's accounting, legal, HR and investor relations information.

In recent news, the teenage hacker behind Rockstar Games' mass leak reportedly sold the source code for Grand Theft Auto V before his arrest. The infiltrator, part of the hacking group Laspus$, previously shared over 90 low-quality videos of Grand Theft Auto VI, which ultimately disappointed fans of the franchise due to the long-awaited title's array of featured bugs and glitches. If genuine, the leak confirmed the introduction of a female protagonist and Vice City setting.

Mortal Kombat II is available to play on Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as an arcade and on multiple other systems. There is no determined release date for the Mortal Kombat II film.
