NetherRealm Studios has unveiled a new trailer for its upcoming fighter game Mortal Kombat 11, but whereas previous teasers focused on the characters, this one is all about story mode.

It's not long after the events of 2015’s MKX, with Shinnok defeated by the thunder god Raiden. Unfortunately, however, this has drawn the attention of Kronika, keeper of time. She’s none too pleased that the side of good is triumphant, and she has assembled a plethora of villains from previous games to turn the tide.

While the previous game had a roster consisting primarily of newbies, MK11 will be more skewed toward veterans. The trailer makes this clear with the return of MKX characters Kotal Khan, Cassie Cage, Erron Black and Jacqui Briggs. The latter three are confirmed playable as of this trailer when gameplay is shown, but Kotal thus far is not.

The only new characters to date are Kronika and her right-hand man, Geras. Older returning members of the cast will meet their former selves, courtesy of time travel, something we get a sample of with Johnny Cage meeting his own self, as does Scorpion.

Moetal Kombat 11 releases on April 23 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.
