The petition for Scooby-Doo character Shaggy Rogers to be added as a DLC character to the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 has hit a major milestone, achieving well over 100,000 signatures in just over 24 hours.
Shaggy's sudden resurgence in popularity initially started as a meme that depicted Shaggy as a godlike fighter mimicking powers of characters from franchises like Dragon Ball Z. That snowballed into something bigger as fans of the Mortal Kombat property decided that Shaggy belonged in the violent, gory video game.
With Shaggy memes going viral all over the Internet, a Change.org petition caught fire with fans who were intent on having Shaggy added to the fighting game's roster as a guest character.
While it might seem like an odd pairing, unlikely guest stars like the Predator and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have made appearances in recent NetherRealm Studios games like Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2.
In fact, it even garnered tongue-in-cheek responses from NetherRealm studio's creative director and MK co-creator, Ed Boon, as well as the man who played Shaggy on the big screen, Matthew Lillard.
You have done well my child. Zoink. https://t.co/J9h53HcbgY— matthew lillard (@MatthewLillard) January 28, 2019
Hi? Lo? Mid? Grab? I will mix your shit up in fighting games! pic.twitter.com/nzCq4iskj7— Ed Boon (@noobde) January 28, 2019
While Shaggy remains an unlikely addition, the petition is rapidly climbing towards its 150,000 signature target. For now, it looks like fans are holding out hope that Shaggy will somehow find himself fighting the forces of Outworld and dishing out fatalities via Scooby Snacks.
Mortal Kombat 11 will release on Apr. 23 for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
