Fans have finally got a glimpse at Rambo’s Mortal Kombat 11 gameplay. Nearly four decades and to the day after the release of Rambo: First Blood (1982) in theaters, Sylvester Stallone’s iconic bandana clad war veteran makes his mark on the Mortal Kombat franchise with a gameplay trailer that highlights a unique gameplay style.

Releasing alongside Rain and Mileena in Kombat Pack 2, John Rambo will join the ranks of the various aliens, predators, and robots that have crossed from the land of film into the Mortal Kombat arena. The short trailer showcases another instance of Mortal Kombat 11's labor of love towards its exciting guest characters.

Aesthetically, Rambo rocks costumes based on the first three films -- First BloodRambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III. Of course, he is voiced by Stallone himself, adding to the authenticity of his character’s appearance. He also comes with a plethora of trademark movie weapons, including the M60 machine gun, compound bow, and a survival knife to cover most situations.

NetherRealm Studios has always had a dicey relationship with “Zoning” characters in the past. While spamming projectiles have long since been accepted as a staple of competitive fighting game strategies (Going all the way back to the inception of Street Fighter’s Hadouken), both the Injustice and Mortal Kombat franchises have been rightfully criticized for their approach to the matter—Having competitive matches move at a glacial pace as the defender patiently waits for openings to close the distance pixel by pixel.

Rambo appears to be a zoner, albeit a unique one. Several of his attacks feature projectile weapons, including his machine gun and compound bow (Which carries several types of arrowheads). Fans of the franchise will notice one of his many distance attacks includes a large, spiked tree swinging from one side of the screen to the other and, of course, a snare trap that drags opponents into the sky.

That being said, he appears to have several abilities and attacks to avoid damage and create openings for his knife attacks at close range. His crawl, combat roll, and sliding kick appear to have the ability to dodge attacks while covering distance quickly, a key component in shutting down other zoners. Defensively, his drop-kick and landmine pose interesting obstacles for rush down characters who don’t check for the hazards, sending them flying to the other side of the screen.

As for Fatalities, his first incredibly gory finisher involves throwing his knife into an opponent's chest, causing them to back up and set off a tripwire attached to several punji sticks that erupt from the ground and impale their victim before Rambo pays homage to his films and rips his victims throat out. Rambo should have a second Fatality in the game like other characters, though it hasn't been shown yet.

Without seeing any actual gameplay, it’s difficult to see what his weaknesses should be, but fighters with aerial attacks or high mobility could pose a big problem for him. Expect his good matchups to be against slower characters who don't cover distance well.
