A new Mortal Kombat 11 trailer has been released that brings together two generations of fighters and reveals the return of some fan-favorite characters in the next incarnation of NetherRealm Studios' iconic fighting franchise..

The trailer, appropriately titled "Old Skool Vs. New Skool," showcases the '90s versions of characters such as Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Jax going up against their future selves in the time-traveling brawl to come. The trio of classic fighters were also in Mortal Kombat X, and they have been confirmed as playable characters by Sony's State of Play program in this sequel.

This new story trailer, set to Ice Cube's "Check Yo Self" and Vince Staples' "Blue Suede," focuses on Liu Kang and Kung Lao, or the "" fighting the undead modern Revenant versions of themselves. Even with the combined might of Liu Kang's classic Dragon-eating and Kung Lao's hat-slicing Fatalities, these Shaolin Monks still couldn't defeat the new time-manipulating villain Geras.

While those two characters appeared in another Mortal Kombat 11 trailer, it wasn't clear if they would be playable characters until this new trailer. Another classic character, Princess Kitana, makes a similarly vague appearance in this trailer that could hint at her presence in the game as a playable character.

Jax engages in some banter with his daughter and younger self, while classic characters such as Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Scorpion go toe-to-toe with their future counterparts. The iconic line's delivered by Kung Lao to his descendant, Liu Kang, as he says, "Our future is insane," which sums up the new world order created by the temporal goddess and game's new villain, Kronika.

With Shang Tsung recently revealed as a DLC character, fans are eager to see which other classic characters return as Kronika pits different eras against each other to undo Raiden's defeat of Shinnok from the last game.

Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23 for PlayStation4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.
