Mortal Kombat 11 just dropped two huge reveals, including a long requested fan-favorite's return.

At the C2E2 panel for the game, the developers showed off not just the addition of Noob Saibot to the roster, but the return of veteran actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa to the role of Shang Tsung, who will be the game’s first DLC character.

Shang Tsung was the antagonist of the original Mortal Kombat, an aged sorcerer who sought to conquer the realms for his master by winning the titular tournament. Though canonically bested by Liu Kang, he remained a thorn in the side of Earthrealm’s heroes for some time. In the current rebooted timeline, Tsung was last seen during the events of Mortal Kombat 3, where he was executed by Shao Kahn for repeated failures.

The central villain of the 1995 blockbuster, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's version of Tsung has remained an iconic presentation for many fans. He's has remained in the periphery of Mortal Kombat ever since, reprising the role of Tsung for the second season of the Machinima web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy in 2013.

Nearly 25 years after Mortal Kombat released in theaters, Tagawa makes history as the first actor from the films to make an appearance in video game form.

Prior to the Tsung reveal, NetherRealm Studios also revealed the addition of Noob Saibot to the main roster. First introduced as a fighter in Mortal Kombat II, Noob Saibot is the evil reincarnation of the original Sub-Zero. Murdered by Scorpion during the events of the original Mortal Kombat, he was corrupted and resurrected as a wraith and has over the various games allied with the most evil characters in the franchise’s history. Last seen in 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot, the new Noob Saibot is significantly different in design, donning a suit of detailed armor and wielding a scythe.

Following the defeat of Shinnok and the corruption of Raiden, Mortal Kombat 11 sees Earthrealm’s heroes up against the threat of a Netherrealm invasion when the mysterious Kronika appears, forcing enemies to become allies as Shao Kahn returns. The story, relying heavily on time travel, features characters and moments from the franchise’s extensive history.
