The official trailer for Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath indicates the war to come will reignite armageddon and forge a new history for the franchise.

The two-minute trailer is a mix of gameplay and story-mode footage, focusing on Raiden and Shang Tsung's deadly alliance as they split up to find Kronika's crown. It shows their crew fighting the legion commanded by revenant Outworld rulers Liu Kang and Kitana, with Johnny Cage making it clear this time it's "no jokes, no gimmicks... just Kombat!"

Interestingly, Kronika is also rallying her own army to ensure she regains the crown she lost at the end of MK11's canonical ending, as it is the only way to rewrite time. The video shows how Nightwolf, Fujin, Jax, Jackie, Scorpion and Sub-Zero factor into the fray, with new characters such as Robocop, Sheeva and Sindel also placed in the spotlight.

Critically, the final moments of the trailer see the human version of Kitana wishing her Edenian mom Queen Sindel remained dead, while an older Liu Kang arrives through a time portal to stop a younger, crown-bearing Shang Tsung from altering the Sands of Time. It is a total flip on the teaser trailer where an older Shang Tsung did the same to the younger Liu Kang, indicating this might be an alternate reality where the shape-shifting sorcerer finally gets what he wants.

Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows and Google Stadia. Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath goes on sale digitally May 26.
