Mortal Kombat 11, the latest installment in the long-running fighting game series, has recently surpassed a significant number of units sold worldwide.

Publisher Warner Bros. Games disclosed that Mortal Kombat 11 has sold over 12 million games to players around the world. The Mortal Kombat franchise now totals over 73 million games sold since the original Mortal Kombat hit shelves in 1992. The publisher also noted that Mortal Kombat Mobile currently sits at 138 million total installs.

With MK's success spawning many theatrical, animated and television adaptations, Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and creative director at developer NetherRealm Studios, expressed his excitement for the still-thriving franchise. "When Mortal Kombat launched nearly 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today with more than 73 million games sold," Boon said. "We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years."

Mortal Kombat 11 holds the series' record for the fastest-selling Mortal Kombat title. In fact, Boon recently tweeted that MK11 is set to surpass 2015's Mortal Kombat X as the highest-selling game in franchise history. Unfortunately, fans expecting this news to lead to more updates for Mortal Kombat 11 will be disappointed to learn that NetherRealm announced support for the game -- including DLC characters -- has come to an end, in a statement released earlier this month.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC and Google Stadia.
